Bakersfield, CA - This past weekend, Friday, June 12th, and Saturday, June 13th, I attended the Bakersfield College Team Camp held at BC's New Gym and Dignity Sports Complex. The event featured teams from the South Valley and some surrounding areas, and they played in a pool play format that finished with bracket play. This article takes a look at 9 standout rising seniors and juniors (class of 2027 and 2028) from the Team Camp, to shine a light on some hidden gems from the Section. In this article you will find the following information: players name, height, position, school, my personal stats, and their skill sets. The players are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked order, and we begin with Gio Fomusoh.

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2932172' first='Giovanni' last='Fomusoh'] (6'3 | WG) - Centennial (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot-3 wing/guard is lengthy and athletic, excels in the open court, is a versatile defender, and is tough to defend when he is on the attack. Fomusoh had a quality showing on Day 1 of the Team Camp in a win over Stockdale of Bakersfield, as he would score 10 points, in a balanced scoring attack for the G-Hawks, but it was the way he scored his 10 points that was impressive. Fomusoh has solid handles, looks to catch and attack the basket off the bounce, using the crossover, hesitation, wrap-behind, and between-cross moves to create space from his defender, is effective with the mid-range jumper off the dribble, with good lift and body control on the shot, and a crafty scorer around the basket, using the Euro-step, spin-move, reverse, and up-and-under lay-ups to evade rim protectors in the paint. Fomusoh has active hands, great lateral quickness, and the timing to jump passing lanes and deflect passes to get out in the open court, and is serviceable at alter shots in the paint and on the perimeter. Fomusoh can space the floor off the catch and still has room to improve his perimeter shot to be a true 3-level scorer and elite two-way player.

2027 Kai McCrary (5'11 | CG) - South Bakersfield (CA)

The 5-foot-11 combo guard has shifty moves to shake his defender, can space the floor from beyond the arc, and is a pesky perimeter defender. McCrary has been at Bakersfield Christian his first 3 years of high school but will be transferring to South Bakersfield, and he showed why he will be a valued commodity for the Spartans, who graduated its top 3 scorers from this past season's squad. McCrary had a strong showing on Day 2 in the semifinals of the Team Camp, as he would score 12 points, pull down 5 rebounds, and snagged a couple of steals to help his team get the win over Cal City. McCracy has solid handles, keeps the ball on a string to survey the floor, uses the crossover, behind-cross, toss-cross, hesitation, and step-back moves to create space from his defender, is effective with the mid-range jumper off the dribble, is a creative scorer around the basket, using the floater, the Euro-step and reverse lay-ups to score in the paint, and moves fluidly off the ball to get open looks for the 3-ball off the catch. McCrary has active hands on defense, quick feet to stay in front of his opponent, and the timing to poke the ball or jump passing lanes to get steals and transition points.

2027 Josiah Frink (6'4 | WG) - Ridgeview (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot-4 wing/guard is a lengthy and athletic player that is versatile on defense, can space the floor from beyond the arc, and excels in the open court. Frink had a solid showing on Day 1 of the Team Camp in a game against South Bakersfield, scoring 10 points and connecting on a pair of threes. Frink has solid handles, uses the wide cross-over, hesitation, wrap-behind, and between-cross to get his defender off balance, has the length and lift on the jumper to score over smaller perimeter players, is effective with the mid-range to the 3-point line, moves well off the ball to get open for the catch and shoot 3-ball, and is crafty on shots around the basket. Frink has the lateral quickness and wingspan to stay in front of perimeter players, the height to alter or block shots in the paint, as well as on the wing, and the timing to jump passing lanes or deflect passes to generate steals.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='3069019' first='Drake' last='Jimenez'] (6' | PG) - Centennial (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot lead guard has elite handles, slices through the defense to find open teammates, and can space the floor from beyond the arc to open up driving lanes. Jimenez is coming off an MVP season this past year, and he has looked like he is ready to pick up from where he left off, scoring 15 points in the G-Hawks opening game at the Team Camp. Jimenez keeps the ball on a string to survey the defense, uses the crossover, toss-cross, behind-cross, between-cross, and the hesitation to keep his defender off balance, has a burst of speed off the bounce to attack the paint, is a creative scorer around the basket, using the Euro-step, reverse, or up-and-under lay-ups, as well as the floater down the lane or from the baseline, and is effective with the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line. Jimenez has great court vision, makes precise reads in tight windows off the drive and kick pass, to the diver out of the pick and roll action, and up the court off the defensive rebound to get ahead and score in transition.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='3461842' first='Sammy' last='Medina'] (6'5 | WF) - Garces Memorial (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot-5 forward has a physical build with the skill set to make precise passes, control the glass, and space the floor from beyond the arc. Medina displayed his full skill set in the Rams semifinal game against Frontier of Bakersfield, as he would finish with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, playing the high-low game with his older brother around the basket with some dimes to the post. Medina crashes the boards, has solid handles to push off the glass, the court vision to make reads up the court, from the top of the key to players cutting off the ball, and from the low block to players cutting down the lane. Medina has the handles to attack from the top of the key, the strength to absorb and finish through contact, and can knock down the jumper from the mid-post to the 3-point line.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='3035266' first='Alec' last='Odsather'] (6'7 | WF) - Porterville (CA)

The 6-foot-7 forward has a lengthy build, is active on the boards to get put-backs off the miss, limits opponents to single shot possessions, has the wingspan and timing to block shots in the paint, as well as close out on perimeter shooters to alter shots. Odsather outlets the ball quickly, runs the floor to ahead of the defense, has good hands and touch on shots around the basket, and has enough handles to put the ball on the deck and attack from the high-post. Odsather is effective on the jumper from the mid-range to the 3-point line, with good movement off the ball to get open looks.

2027 Alex Savage (6'1 | CG) - Garces Memorial (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot-1 combo guard has great footwork to operate in the interior, finds holes in the defense to score the ball, and plays with relentless energy on both ends of the court. Savage had two strong showings in the games I watched live, going for a team-high of 20 points to help lead his team in a win over McFarland, followed by a 13 point and 6 rebound performance in the semifinal win at the Team Camp. Savage has solid handles, keeps the dribble alive to survey the defense, gets into the paint routinely, and has great footwork and use of the pivot, along with the hesitation, to find openings and creases in the defense, with good body control and the strength to score around the basket with the up-and-under, reverse, and spin-move lay-ups to score among height, and was effective with the mid-range jumper. Savvy player that understands court spacing and plays with non-step energy on each play.

2027 John Trichell (6'1 | CG) - Garces Memorial (Bakersfield CA)

The 6-foot-1 combo guard can light it up from beyond the arc, crash the glass, and operate the flow of the offense with the ball in his hands. Trichell had a great second half in the semifinal win over Frontier of Bakersfield, as he would score 9 of his 14 points, connecting on 4 threes over the course of the game. Trichell has solid handles and moves to create off the dribble, moves fluidly off the ball to get open looks off the catch, and can score in volume from the 3-point line. Trichell is solid on the boards, looks to push the ball off the glass, has good court vision to make plays up the court or in the half-court setting, off the drive and kick pass or to the diver out of the pick and roll action. With the return of Bryce Hanson to Garces, Trichell's perimeter shooting will be valued by the high-level lead guard that loves to attack the basket and a willing passer to open teammates on the wing.

2027 John Williams (5'9 | SG) - Ridgeview (Bakersfield CA)

The 5-foot-9 shooting guard had a strong showing on Day 1 of the Team Camp, as he would connect on 3 threes for a total of 11 points in a loss to South Bakersfield. Williams has solid handles, the moves to create off the wing, the off ball movement to get to his shot spots, and is accurate with the 3-ball off the catch. Solid on-ball defender and a player that will be needed to help the Wolfpack score the ball.
