The New Hope Indians enter the summer with a strong foundation already in place. Unlike many teams across the state that are searching for answers after graduation losses, Coach Nelson's squad returns a significant amount of varsity experience and proven production. With veteran leadership, emerging young talent, and a roster full of players who understand what it takes to compete at the varsity level, the Indians have plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into the upcoming season. The month of June will be critical as New Hope works to build chemistry, define roles, and identify areas for improvement. If the Indians can get everyone pulling in the same direction, they have the pieces to become one of the more dangerous teams in the state.

Everything starts with Lucas as he is a four-year starter and enters the season on the verge of eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone, a testament to both his consistency and impact throughout his high school career. He has developed into one of the most complete players in the area and will once again be the centerpiece of New Hope's success. At 6-foot-2, he possesses the size, athleticism, and skill set to impact the game in a variety of ways. He is a dangerous perimeter shooter who can stretch defenses beyond the arc, but he is far more than just a shooter. His athleticism allows him to attack the basket, finish through contact, and make plays above the rim when opportunities present themselves.

James Hilliard (6'4/F|C/New Hope)

James provides New Hope with one of the most versatile frontcourt pieces in the area. At 6-foot-4, he brings a unique blend of size, skill, and positional flexibility that creates matchup problems for opposing defenses. He can operate effectively with his back to the basket, using his strength and footwork to score around the rim, but he is equally comfortable stepping away from the basket and stretching the floor as a perimeter threat.

His ability to play both inside and outside allows Coach Nelson flexibility in how he structures the offense.

Landon is one of the most exciting young prospects in North Alabama, and he continues to show why his future is extremely bright. Despite being one of the younger players on the roster, he already plays with a confidence and competitiveness that stands out. His quickness immediately jumps off the page, allowing him to create separation with the ball in his hands and attack the rim with purpose. He is a dynamic ball-handler who thrives off the bounce and consistently puts pressure on defenses. Once he gets downhill, he is difficult to contain and has shown the ability to finish in traffic against older competition.

One of the biggest storylines for New Hope this summer will be the development of Landon. Despite his youth, he is expected to step into the lead guard role and take on the responsibility of running the offense. That is no small task, especially at the varsity level, but the coaching staff clearly believes in his ability to handle the challenge.

Hudson Layne (G/'28/New Hope)

Hudson enters the summer as one of the players most poised for a breakout year. After putting together a solid sophomore campaign, the coaching staff is looking for him to take the next step and become a major contributor on both ends of the floor. The foundation is already there, and now the focus shifts toward consistency and expanded production.

What Should We Expect From New Hope During The Month of June:

Expect a team that understands how to compete. One of New Hope's biggest strengths entering the summer is experience. Several players on the roster have logged meaningful varsity minutes, which gives the Indians a significant advantage compared to teams relying heavily on inexperienced contributors. The talent is there. The experience is there. Now the challenge becomes building chemistry and ensuring everyone is moving toward the same goal. Coach Nelson believes this group has the potential to have a very good season if the players continue to buy in and develop together. June will be about learning how the pieces fit and identifying the combinations that maximize the team's strengths.

What Coach Nelson Is Looking To See From His Team During The Month of June:

For Coach Nelson, the summer is less about wins and losses and more about growth. The primary objective is gaining a better understanding of what the team does well and where improvements are needed on both ends of the floor. Every game, practice, and possession provides valuable information that can be used to prepare for the fall and winter months ahead. The coaching staff wants to identify strengths, expose weaknesses, and establish areas of emphasis moving forward. By the end of June, the goal is to have a clear roadmap for improvement and a better understanding of how this team can maximize its potential. With experienced veterans, versatile contributors, and talented young guards continuing to emerge, New Hope enters the summer with plenty of reasons for optimism. If the Indians can continue developing chemistry and sharpening their identity, they could become a team that makes a lot of noise when the regular season arrives.
