Spring AAU Team to Watch: Virginia Elite (17U UA)

As the spring grassroots season gets underway, once again positions itself as one of the premier national grassroots basketball programs to track in the DMV. Known for competing on the Under Armour (UA) major shoe circuit and consistently producing college-level talent, the program has established a reputation as a reliable pipeline for next-level college prospects.   That reputation is backed by alumni success, including current college players Jordan Scott (Michigan State), Miles Franklin (Columbia University), Solomon Davis (Virginia Tech University), Grant Golden (University of Richmond), Malachi Poindexter (Illinois State/UVA), Kevon Voyles (Marshall University/UMES), Paul Rowley (William and Mary)  just to name a few further reinforcing as a program college coaches trust when evaluating talent.   This year's 17U groups looks no different, featuring several prospects who should draw consistent attention from college programs.   Top Division 1 Prospects to Watch :    Farrell, a 6'6 wing from nationally ranked No. 1 Paul VI, continues to see his stock trending upward. An explosive athlete with great length, he impacts the game on both ends. Offensively, he's a polished scorer who shoots it at a high level from the mid-range and beyond the arc. He thrives in transition where his athleticism stands out, and he's equally effective attacking the rim in the half court. With his skill set and upside, Farrell will be leaned on as a key contributor this spring, playing a major role in the continued success for the VA elite program.     Young is set to play a major role for VA Elite this spring. A smooth lefty combo guard, he brings a natural feel for the game and plays with great pace and control. He's a confident shot-maker who can knock it down off the dribble and from beyond the arc, making him a constant scoring threat. Defensively, he stands out with his anticipation and instincts, disrupting passing lanes and making plays. With his all-around skill set as combo guard , expect Young's stock to continue rising throughout the spring.     One player that Gadson is especially high on is rising 6-foot-8 C/F Ibrahim “Abe” Khan. His belief in Khan's upside is clear, elevating him to the 17U level this season as a true rising sophomore. The 6-foot-8 big brings a developing inside presence, and Gadson has set high expectations, noting Khan shows similar traits to former forwards/centers Grant Golden (Richmond), Josh Oduro (Providence/NBA), and Jonah Munson (Central Arkansas). Khan, who attends Paul VI alongside [program_tooltip program_id='2078817' first='Virginia' last='Elite'] teammate Djossinou. Abe is expected to make a meaningful impact this spring and attract attention from college coaches.     Donavan, out of DeMatha Catholic, is a guard who consistently brings impact on both ends of the floor. He has a strong ability to create his own shot and is a reliable perimeter shooter, capable of knocking down open threes with confidence. What really separates him is his defensive intensity ,he embraces the challenge of guarding the opposing team's top players and thrives in those tough assignments. With his energy, competitiveness, and two-way presence, Donavan will be counted on heavily this spring. Expect him to take on key defensive matchups while continuing to make his mark offensively.     Farley is an athletic, high-motor wing forward who brings energy and versatility on both ends of the floor. He stands out immediately with his explosiveness and ability to impact the game in multiple areas. Defensively, Farley plays with aggression and purpose. He has the tools to guard multiple positions, using his length, quickness, and effort to disrupt opposing players. His ability to switch and defend across the floor makes him a valuable piece in any lineup. Offensively, his athleticism allows him to make plays in transition and attack the basket effectively. He thrives when playing downhill and brings consistent energy that translates into production. As the spring season progresses, Farley is a name to keep on the radar. With his athletic ability, defensive upside, and competitiveness, he has the potential to see his stock rise and attract attention from college coaches.     Coming off a state championship season, Claiborne enters the spring circuit with strong momentum as he transitions to [program_tooltip program_id='2078817' first='Virginia' last='Elite'] from Team Loaded. He projects as a key piece for the program and one of the more intriguing point guards to track in the 2027 class. Claiborne is a physical, confident lead guard who plays with a strong feel for the game. He does a great job controlling tempo, making reads, and getting teammates involved while still being able to create his own offense when needed. His handle is tight and crafty, allowing him to navigate defenders and create space in the half court. He's also a reliable perimeter shooter who can knock down the three consistently, which makes him a threat both on and off the ball. At 5'10”, Claiborne compensates for size with strength, toughness, and competitiveness defending bigger guards effectively and bringing a physical edge on that end of the floor.   His game draws similarities to Jameer Nelson in terms of his build, toughness, and ability to control the game as a floor general. Claiborne has already begun to attract attention from multiple Division I programs, and that interest should continue to grow. With his skill set, leadership, and competitive nature, he is expected to be a centerpiece for Va. Elite this spring.   He's firmly a name to watch in the 2027 point guard class and one whose stock should continue to rise as he performs on the grassroots stage.
