Expert Analysis
Ira Becks | Prep Hoops Scout
Donny Wright was another standout performer over the weekend for a loaded Virginia Elite squad, making a strong impact with his defensive presence and competitive edge. He consistently took on the toughest assignments and embraced the challenge, using his intensity and effort to disrupt opposing players and set the tone on that end of the floor. On the offensive side, he contributed effectively by knocking down perimeter shots and capitalizing in transition, showing he can play his role while still making key plays. A tough, high-motor competitor, Wright’s two-way impact and willingness to do the dirty work make him a valuable piece. His performance this weekend positions him to draw increased attention from college coaches during the upcoming live period.

Wright is a strong, physical wing who is capable of scoring at all three levels. He is a reliable open shot maker from beyond the arc, can attack closeouts to get into the paint, and has the ability to finish through contact. He also shows touch in the midrange, giving him a well-rounded offensive package. On the defensive end, Wright is a willing and competitive defender who plays with a high motor.

Virginia Elite went 1-2 this weekend as their group continues to learn each others strengths and work out the kinks before the live period. While they have intriguing long-term prospects throughout the roster, Wright is more of a producer in the now and he proved that again with his play as the lead guard. There isn’t much that’s flashy about Wright’s game, but there’s no issue with that when you consider his strict north to south attack in getting downhill and putting massive pressure on the rim. He was effective at finding the slightest of driving lanes and using a quick first step to exploit them. On countless occasions, Wright attacked the rim looking to initiate contact and force the ref’s whistle, which he did effectively and converted at the charity stripe. Wright is an intense competitor at both ends and should be a big piece to this Virginia Elite squad this summer in UA Rise play. The DeMatha product finished the weekend averaged 17 points per game in the three contests.

Donavan, out of DeMatha Catholic, is a guard who consistently brings impact on both ends of the floor. He has a strong ability to create his own shot and is a reliable perimeter shooter, capable of knocking down open threes with confidence. What really separates him is his defensive intensity ,he embraces the challenge of guarding the opposing team’s top players and thrives in those tough assignments. With his energy, competitiveness, and two-way presence, Donavan will be counted on heavily this spring. Expect him to take on key defensive matchups while continuing to make his mark offensively.

-One of my favorite 2-way guys in the area, Wright carved out a consistent role as a starter for the Stags this season as a junior. Wright is an unselfish passer in the open court, takes on difficult guard defensive assignments facing off against different archetypes, and was a really pesky offensive rebounder that sprinted into the fray to extend possessions for his team. His ability to create his own shot on the ball, add more finishing moves in the paint, and knock down open 3s to space the floor for DM will be crucial in taking that next step in his senior season. But our scouts loved seeing the energy he brought, especially to the defensive end of the floor, over the season.

-Love the heart and motor that plays with in every game that I’ve seen him, making the most of his minutes whenever they come as he will likely carve out a role for himself with the Stags this season. Wright is an explosive athlete, plays passing lanes well, will take on any defensive matchup given to him, and is always moving off the ball. The shooting and dribbling have improved quite a bit over the past year, only expect that curve to continue due to his focus and work ethic.

-I’ve seen Wright play a few times within the past few months and this weekend was by far the best that I’ve seen him play as a rising junior that should have an opportunity to carve out a role for himself this year with DeMatha. Wright came off the bench and immediately got after it at the defensive end of the floor to force turnovers in their fullcourt press to help DM put the game away. Wright also affected the game on the glass to give his team a few extra possessions while also impacting the game as a rebounder/finisher in the key. Looking forward to seeing what role he is able to carve out to boost his stock and recruitment this season.
