NERR Northeast Hoop Fest: 16U Division Impressive Performances

After a really impactful year at Haverhill High School, it was up in the air whether he would be able to be as comfortable and confident with the ball in his hands against higher level competition in AAU. But against Middlesex Magic's HGSL team last weekend, the 6-foot-2 guard showed off his well-rounded skillset. Some guys just look like they're meant to operate with the ball in their hands, and that's Contreras. He has long arms, long strides, and is a cerebral passer and ball-handler. He can play at his own pace but also has a nice burst. Though he took some questionable shots at times, he earned the green light to take them because he made a bunch to start the game. He has a super quick and shifty and handle and even though he isn't tall, he has great change of speed and direction and good elevation on his mid range jumper. He hit a good number of super difficult shots with lots of contests, and he has good vision when he really leans into it. The 6-foot-4 forward was too big and strong for opposing big men to box him out, and he consistently fought for offensive boards and then finished with both hands in the paint. His combination of size, strength, athleticism, and motor allows him to be quite effective in all of the "little things" categories, and he'll probably continue to refine his skillset as he gets older. At the front of the 1-2-2 full-court press, he must've had 10+ deflections and was consistently giving ball-handlers an extremely difficult time bringing the ball up the floor or even passing horizontally. He can guard anyone with his combination of strength and toughness, and he was one of the more impactful defensive players I saw last weekend. The 5-foot-9 guard got to wherever he wanted on the court and consistently scored from all three levels. He has great quickness, athleticism, and skill, and he can pass the rock as well. Though he's small, he does a good job finishing with contact and really impressed me with his touch and feel for the game. He moves well without the ball and doesn't take difficult shots—he's smart and understands what a good look is—but he's a talented marksman who could probably have the leeway to take some harder ones. He has size and length, and really good footwork and balance when coming off screens and spotting up. Maturah should be a key piece of Magic's HGLS squad this season and will almost definitely be a bigger part of Brooks' location next season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
