Oakland, CA - This past weekend, April 11th and 12th, I attended the Elite Spring Hoops Showcase and Tournament held at various facilities in Oakland, Walnut Creek, Clayton Valley, Martinez, and other surrounding cities. I attended the Showcase portion of the event which was held at Open Gym Premier Oakland's four court facility. The Showcase division featured teams from the 3SSB Adidas Circuit, P32 New Balance, Adidas Gold Circuit, and EHA's new circuit, as well as other high level independent teams. I arrived at the gym for the second game on Day 1 and departed at 1:30 on Day 2, watching a total of 18 games over the two day span. This article is Part 2 and takes a look at 5 standout combo/wing guards from the Showcase Division, which is a 2-part series focused on the top combo/wing guards. I will also look at standout wings, forwards, and centers in follow-up articles. In this article you will find the following information: players name, height, grad class, position, school, club team, how they performed, and their skill sets. The players are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked order, and we begin with [player_tooltip player_id='2751030' first='Austin' last='See'].

The 6-2 wing/guard displayed the ability to be a play maker, as well as a shot maker, and showcased the ability to score the ball from 3-levels. See has a strong handle on the ball, keeps his head up to survey the defense, has good court vision to find open teammates from the top of the key cutting off the ball, as well as up the court to get ahead of the defense. See moves well off the ball to find open holes in the defense to get open looks, is accurate with the 3-ball off the catch, uses the crossover, hesitation, and spin-move to create space from his defender, is effective with the mid-range jumper off the dribble, and has the strength and solid burst off the bounce to score at the cup through contact.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='2915953' first='Rhead' last='Sweeney'] 6'4|CG (Buchanan/Clovis) - Jaylen Wells Elite 16 P32

The 6-foot-4 combo guard can light it up from beyond the arc, can create for himself or make plays for others, and is an underrated defender that can guard the 1 through 3 effectively. Sweeney moves fluidly off the ball, running off screens and making cuts to get to his shot spots, is accurate with the 3-ball off the catch, is a great positional rebounder that can push the pace of play in the open court, and has active hands and good lateral footspeed to stay in front of opposing players, jumping passing lanes and deflecting entry passes generate turnovers. Sweeney keeps the ball on a string, uses the crossover, hesitation, between-cross, and spin-move to create space from his defender, uses his long strides to get by his opponent and into the paint, is a creative sorcerer at the basket, with the Euro-step, reverse, or up-and-under lay-ups in his bag. Sweeney has a smooth jumper that he can connect with accuracy from the mid-range to the 3-point line off the bounce. He has the court vision and decision aiming to find open teammates off the drive and kick pass.

2028 Quillan “Qiqi” Thompson 6'4|WG (Lincoln/Stockton) - Jaylen Wells Elite 16 P32

The 6-foot-4 wing/guard displayed his ability to get to the basket routinely, stays active on the glass, is a versatile defender, and plays with relentless energy on both ends. Thompson understands moving off the ball, making v-cuts, back-cuts, and running off screens to get open, is effective with the mid-range jumper off the catch, and finds openings in the defense around the basket for easy catch and score opportunities, has good footwork and body control to use the post-up spin-move into the lay-up or the short jumper, and can space the floor with the 3-ball to open up the court. Thompson crashes the boards on both ends, limits opponents to single shot possessions and can push the ball up the court, or score on put-backs off the offensive rebound, and has active hands to poke the ball out or jump passing lanes, which allows for some big time dunks in transition.

2028 Cameron Walls 6'5|CG (Destiny Christian Academy/Sacramento) - Lakeshow 3SSB 16s

The 6-foot-5 combo guard is an elite on-ball defender, plays with a quick but controlled pace with the ball, and can spread the floor from beyond the arc to open up the court. Walls has active hands, great lateral quickness to get into his opponent's dribbling space, pressuring them into bad decisions, with the timing and instincts to poke the ball, deflect the ball when coming from the weakside, or jump passing lanes to turn defense to offense routinely. Walls has a strong handle on the ball, keeps his dribble alive to find openings in the defense, uses the behind-cross, crossover, hesitation, and between-cross to get his defender off balance, accelerates quick off the dribble to get paint touches, and either can score with creativity at the basket, using the Euro-step and reverse lay-ups, as well as having the court vision and precision passing to find teammates off the drive and kick pass or up the court off the glass. Walls moves well off the ball to get to his shot spots, is effective with the 3-ball off the catch, looks to back down smaller defenders with the ability to connect on the spin-fade middy or find teammates cutting off the ball. Relentless motor and tough minded player that will make a splash on the 3SSB Circuit.

2029 [player_tooltip player_id='2952311' first='Jaysean' last='West'] 6'2|WG (Cardinal Newman/Santa Rosa) - NBBA Elite NorCal UA Rise 15s

The 6-foot-2 wing/guard showed tenacious defense, constantly attacking the basket, and active on the glass. West had some impact plays down the stretch to help his team get a win over Lillard's 3SSB 15s to close out Day 1 of the Showcase. West has solid handles, shifty moves to get by his initial defender, the physicality to absorb contact and score at the basket, and has the reverse and up-and-under lay-ups in his bag to evade shot blockers. West has quick hands, good lateral quickness, and good athleticism to lock up perimeter players, preventing them from getting into the paint, and looks to poke the ball out and generate steals.
