Competing Every Possession: Inside North Dakota Phenom
In this article:
In a region where opportunities can be limited but talent continues to rise, North Dakota Phenom is building something different.
Led by program director Jordan Maurer, the invite-only club has quickly established itself as a competitive and development-driven program, focused on preparing players for the next level.
In a recent conversation with Prep Hoops' Andy Hansen, Maurer broke down the philosophy behind the program and why it continues to gain traction across the region.
With teams set to compete in multiple Prep Hoops events this season, North Dakota Phenom will once again test itself against high-level competition while providing key exposure opportunities for its players.
A Selective, Team-First Approach
Operating out of North Dakota, Phenom keeps its structure tight, fielding just four high school teams (17U, 16U, and 15U levels) with players pulled from across the state.
The program is invite-only, with a strong emphasis on evaluation and long-term fit.
“We put a lot of time into identifying the right players,” Maurer said. “And once they're in, retention is a big focus.”
That continuity has become a defining trait of the program, allowing players to build chemistry and grow together over multiple seasons.
Built on Competition
North Dakota Phenom's identity starts with a simple principle: compete every possession.
From the opening training camps through the busy spring and summer schedule, the program emphasizes effort and execution on both ends of the floor.
Key pillars include:
- Taking quality shots
- Taking care of the basketball
- Defending at a high level
- Rebounding to initiate offense
“If you don't do those things, you have no chance,” Maurer said. “But if you do, you give yourself a real opportunity to succeed at the next level.”
Preparing for the Next Level
While talent is a prerequisite, Maurer and his staff focus heavily on translating high school success into college readiness.
The program mirrors a high school-style system, complete with structured offensive and defensive schemes, while also pushing players to adapt to the physicality and pace of the college game.
One key element: bringing in current and former college players to compete against Phenom teams during training sessions.
“If you want to play college basketball, you have to play against college players,” Maurer said.
That exposure helps bridge the gap, especially for players coming from a smaller state where high-level competition can be limited.

2026 Season Outlook
Phenom's schedule once again includes key stops on the Prep Hoops circuit, highlighted by events like Battle at the Lakes and the Prep Hoops 2K26 live period.
For Maurer, those events provide the ideal mix of competition and exposure.
You're getting high-level games and a wide range of college coaches,” he said. “It's great for players at all levels.
From Division II and NAIA programs to Division I opportunities, the events consistently bring in schools that align with the program's talent pool.
Exposure That Matters
Beyond competition, Maurer pointed to the value of year-round coverage as a differentiator for his players.
With consistent evaluation and content from Prep Hoops, players receive visibility both during their high school seasons and throughout the travel circuit.
That level of coverage and accuracy is huge,” Maurer said. “It's been a big part of helping our players get recruited.
Looking Ahead
With a focused roster, a competitive mindset, and a clear pathway to college basketball, North Dakota Phenom continues to build momentum.
As the season approaches, the program will once again look to prove itself - possession by possession - on the Prep Hoops stage.
