returned back to Oregon. The 6-foot-7 forward spent his senior season at Newberg, and it was a solid one as he earned Second Team All-Conference honors and helped lead the Tigers back to respectability and compete for a playoff berth. He's now going to keep on staying in-state at the college level having recently committed to play his college basketball at Pacific University.
"Firstly, my Dad went to Pacific and played golf there for 4 years and loved it," Thompson said. "So him having that experience there helped reassure me on any concerns of the college. Secondly about the program, Coach (Justin) Lunt has seen the potential I have to become a great player in the future as I am still rapidly growing, and still need to put on a lot of muscle, and he thinks that he can help develop me to become that player."
Thompson dove into the future fit on the basketball court for him with the Boxers. "Well as you probably know, Pacific lost a lot of size from last year, graduating some and having some go on a mission trip," Thompson said. "And with them losing around 75 minutes of playing time from last year, I believe I have an opportunity to cement myself as a future big for their program who also can shoot the basketball at a very high level."
This past year, Thompson averaged 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks - which ranked 6th in 6A. A stretch big, he stepped out and knocked down 1.9 threes per game, which ranked second on the team. It was a good year for Thompson and looking back, he was thankful for it all.
"Getting one last season with the guys I grew up playing basketball with, my Dad coached 8 of the 9 seniors that were on the team from 4-8th grade," Thompson said. "Having one last ride with friends from so long ago is something I can't forget."
Our congratulations go out to Thompson and his family on his commitment.
