MPSSAA 2A Playoff Recap: Dominant '28s

The MPSSAA State Championship brought out some of the best individual performances of the season with multiple players stepping up in the biggest of moments!   The future of 2A basketball was on full display, with several underclassmen stepping up to the plate. These players showed advanced feel, confidence, and production beyond their years that made a big impact for their respective teams in their MPSSAA 2A games.    Abdul was a physical interior presence that imposed his will in the paint from the opening MPSSAA games. He controlled the paint with his size and consistently finished through traffic. Abdul embraced contact and converted multiple tough finishes against his opponents and made his presence felt throughout the postseason for Gwynn Park. His ability to dominate inside, finish through contact, and consistently produce around the basket made him one of the most impactful underclassmen in the postseason.     Tyzon has been a reliable interior presence for Lackey all season and he established that even more-so through Lackey's State Championship run. He used his body well to carve out space down low and finish around defenders. Tyzon's soft hands made for easy turn and scores after getting himself open. He was an active rebounder each game and controlled the glass on both ends most nights. Defensively Swann made his presence felt by protecting the paint and altering shots around the rim. Tyzon's consistency, physicality, and ability to execute his role at a high level played a key part in Lackey's MPSSAA 2A championship run.     Calvin showcased himself as a versatile offensive guard during Surrattsville's short-winded playoff run. He impacted the game with both his shooting and playmaking ability. I was impressed with how Calvin knocked down perimeter shots with confidence while also serving as a key facilitator. Calvin consistently got into the paint, collapsed the defense, and found the right teammate showing strong vision and feel. His ability to create off the bounce led to multiple trips to the free throw line, as he applied pressure on the defense throughout the game. Impressive showing from the sophomore guard who will look to take the reigns soon at Surrattsville as a junior next season.     Bradie showed as a smart, poised guard who consistently made the right plays on both ends of the floor for Southern. He played under control and read different defensive coverages well. I liked how Bradie made efficient decisions with the ball in his hands. Offensively he was able to down open threes and attacked the lane when opportunities presented themselves, finishing tough drives through traffic. His scoring prowess and decision-making help make him an intriguing young guard to watch amongst the future of Prince George's County prospects.     Xavier was a confident scoring combo guard that delivered in big moments and showed high-level shot-making ability already as a sophomore. He displayed a smooth shooting stroke and wasn't afraid of the moment, knocking down a game-tying three to send his team into overtime in their early playoff win Xavier consistently made tough shots over strong defensive contests and showed elite confidence in his jumpshot. While he didn't rely on quickness, he found ways to create shots for himself and get quality looks. He sealed the game at the line in an overtime win, showing composure under pressure. Xavier's shot-making and confidence stood out to me during C Milton Wright's postseason games.
