Defense is something that often doesn't get enough credit, but it's essential to a team winning and separates a lot of prospects from others. Here's a look at five under the radar rim protectors in the Hampton Roads area.

Theodor Conradi-Muryn | 6'8” C | Lafayette 2026

Conradi-Muyrn is having a great season leading Lafayette to a one seed in the regional tournament, and he's been their glue guy on both ends of the floor The 6'8” big man has been a force in the paint clogging lanes and challenging shots at the rim, he does a great job staying vertical and not swatting down, he can switch and use his length to block shots on smaller players from behind, and he's also a great option offensively with his touch in the paint too.

Devon Polk | 6'5” PF | Deep Creek 2026

Polk may be a little undersized, but he makes up for it with his blend of athleticism and a high motor that allows him to dominate the glass and protect the rim as well. He's a strong kid with good explosion and is a quick leaper, he has great timing to meet guys at the rim when they're coming downhill, he can track guys down in transition for chase down blocks, and he is very good at starting the break with outlets after blocking shots.

Machai Toxey | 6'6” PF | Portsmouth Christian 2026

Toxey is the definition of a workhorse and a defensive specialist, as he may not put up big scoring numbers but he impacts the game a lot with his presence on that side of the ball. The 6'6” forward has great length and can challenge shots by walling up, he is fearless challenging opponents at the rim, he uses his size to box out and attack the glass, and he does all the dirty work to help his team.

Jaydin McLean | 6'4” PF | Warhill 2027

McLean is having a breakout season for a very good Warhill team, putting up big numbers on both ends of the floor and making a case for an All Region selection. The 6'4” forward is a walking mismatch who is quick and athletic enough to switch and strong and explosive enough to challenge shots at the rim, he's got a great second jump and is disciplined to stay down on shot fakes, and he is a bucket on the offensive end using the same mismatch tendencies too.

Sylvestor Coleman | 6'7” PF | Portsmouth Christian 2027

Coleman has had a breakout junior season for a Portsmouth Christian team looking to make a deep run in the VISAA tournament, and he's emerging as one of the top big men in the 757 moving forward. The 6'7” big man is elite challenging shots with great timing and good athleticism, he blocks shots with authority that bring energy to his team, he can chase down players in transition, and he uses his athleticism on the glass and to play above the rim as well.
