SANTA FE – Two weeks ago, Sandia buried district Capital under an avalanche of 3-pointers, connecting on 14 in 34 attempts en route to a convincing victory over the Jaguars.

Tuesday, the Matadors demonstrated they can win in a different way. Shunning the triple, Sandia won its fourth straight game, 59-47, over Santa Fe by utilizing its superior speed and quickness for a lethal transition game. Over and over, the Matadors beat the Demons down the floor with long passes or rapid ball movement, a strategy that led to numerous easy baskets.

Sandia attempted just 15 3-pointers, a far cry from the 34 they attempted against Capital, the 35 against Manzano and the 29 against Eldorado in the first three games of the current winning streak. The Matadors made five of their 15 3-point attempts against the Demons.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1698809' first='Lavodrick' last='Hogues'] led a balanced Sandia scoring attack with 14 points, while junior [player_tooltip player_id='2216279' first='Dion' last='Cumber'] had 13 and [player_tooltip player_id='2215933' first='Mateo' last='Hogan'] 12. Standout sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='2714567' first='Isaiah' last='Brown'] (multiple next level offers) scored just 5 points, but he contributed 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals.

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2714561' first='George' last='Smith'] missed the game with an injury.

After a slow start offensively (Santa Fe led, 9-7, after the 1st quarter), Sandia seized control of the game midway through the second quarter. Three of the Matadors' five 3-pointers came in a 13-4 surge that closed out the first half and gave them a 24-15 lead at intermission.

Sandia's lead grew to double digits (28-17) early in the third quarter on a basket by Hogues. The lead expanded to 15 (37-22) on a transition layup that defined the second half.

Sandia led, 41-25, at the end of the third quarter.

Sanat Fe drilled a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to nine points with just under six minutes remaining. But Brown displayed his dazzling ball handling skills and ability to improvise shots with a nifty basket in the lane to short-circuit the rally.

Sandia soon built the lead back to 16 points (54-38) on a conventional 3-point play by junior Wally Vandyke and another transition basket by Hogues to seal the victory.

The Matadors improved to 14-7 overall, 4-1 in District 5A-2. They are one-half game behind La Cueva in the district standings. The Bears host Manzano Wednesday night. Santa Fe fell to 12-8 overall, 3-2 in district play.
