<p>The start of the 2026-27 New Mexico high school basketball season is still six months away, but it's never too early to take a look at some of the key players. Here are five players you need to know in Class 2A:</p>

<p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3573645' first='Chase' last='Atkinson'], Oak Grove Classical</strong>: The top scorer among all juniors in Class 2A last season. The 6-foot-4 Atkinson averaged over 21 points per game. Excellent shooter and rebounder. With Atkinson returning in 2026-27, Oak Grove hopes to make a deeper run in the state tournament.</p>

<p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2833696' first='Jett' last='Curtis'], Texico</strong>: In the last two years alone, Curtis has won two state football championships and two state basketball titles in Class 2A with the Wolverines. Curtis led Texico in scoring this past season, averaging close to 19 points per game. He's one of the most prolific 3-pointers shooters in the state. Nearly half of his field goals (99 of 203) last season came from 3-point range. He buried NINE 3-pointers in a game against Hagerman in February. </p>

<p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3589330' first='Aaron' last='Marizcal'], Tatum</strong>: The top freshman scorer in Class 2A this past season as he averaged 15.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Tatum struggled to win games but the Coyotes hope Marizcal leads them to a comeback season in 2026-27. Five of Tatum's top six scorers last season were sophomores, freshmen or 8<sup>th</sup>-graders. </p>

<p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2894524' first='Mateo' last='Torrez'], Escalante</strong>: Torrez shot a sizzling 57 percent from the floor as he averaged 12 points and nearly 7 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Lobos. He is Escalante's top returning scorer, positioning him to become the team leader for the next two seasons. </p>

<p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2707018' first='Angelo' last='Zamora'], Penasco</strong>: Zamora emerged as one of the top players in northern New Mexico in 2025-26. Averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game for the Panthers. Zamora will be Penasco's leader in 2026-27 as they graduate the top two scorers.</p>
