<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>On Thursday January 29th I attended the match-up of 4A&nbsp;<strong>Marcos de Niza Padres</strong>&nbsp;hosting the 4A&nbsp;<strong>Mesquite Wildcats.</strong>&nbsp;Mesquite will make the playoffs most likely and Marcos has a chance of sneaking in as well. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I checked out all three levels with Freshman, JV and Varsity.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Here were the standouts on the night&nbsp;</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>All the stats are unofficial.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Freshman Game</strong>&nbsp;(<strong>67-39 Mesquite won)</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454691' first='Albert' last='Valier'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A bigger post player with some size and weight. He has great hands and feet with a nice touch around the basket. He can score thru contact with his frame, score with hook shots and tough layups plus he is a strong two-handed rebounder. He is also a very good passer and scored 25 points.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2926073' first='Ty' last='Sallee'] Mesquite</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A versatile forward is a good passer who is very unselfish. He rebounds well in and out of his area and runs the floor well. He will step out and hit the three calmly and fights inside to score in the paint.&nbsp;Another nice future forward for the Wildcats. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454718' first='Denny' last='Mujagic'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A versatile combo guard who plays from the neck up with a high feel for the game. He is always looking up to facilitate and can also score with downhill takes, threes off the catch and he can get a step on his defender. &nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454712' first='De'Shawn' last='Howard'] Marcos de Niza</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A scoring lead guard who score plus make plays for his teammates. He loves using the floater game and has a nice runner. He will rattle in threes off the catch in the corner with a super quick release. He will throw up the court passes and has a knack for scoring. He also played on JV. and scored 16 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454713' first='Hayden' last='Spirlong'] Marcos de Niza&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A scoring guard is a catch and shoot three point type. He can handle it a little and create some of his own offense and get his shot off from mid to the three plus he can burst down the lane. He has longer arms to rebound and get deflections. He scored around 10 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2921309' first='Dennis' last='Tolliver'] Marcos de Niza</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A long and lean shooting guard is good in transition and he can score with mid-range pull-ups with a quicker release. He can step out and shoot the three and finished with close to 8 points and also played up on JV.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Junior Varsity Game (48-45 Mesquite won)</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2755997' first='Joseph' last='Gutierrez'] Mesquite</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A bigger guard who is a good passer. He has a polished mid-range jumper off the dribble and smartly plays off of two feet and will stop and pop and rise up. He changes speeds well to get downhill and his size bothers his opponents on defense. He scored around 8 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454807' first='BJ' last='Lee Joyner'] Mesquite</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A scoring guard with a little size and feel. He will score it with transition layups, he will euro step to the basket and shows plus footwork inside to score it around the basket. He is long in the passing lanes and is also a sneaky good passer. He scored around 10 points.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454808' first='Isaiah' last='Sinclair'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A long scoring guard is a deep three point shooter with length. He has a high arcing shot with a quicker release and he is very fast on the break. He can get a step on his defender and finished with around 10 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3454778' first='Amari' last='Bush'] Marcos de Niza</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A quick on quick undersized point guard with a super tight handle. He has a burst with real speed. He is a quick on-ball defender with quick hands and feet and rips pockets plus rebounds well for his size. He will score with tough tear drops and throw some next level up the court passes. He finished with 7 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Varsity Game (83-60 Mesquite won)</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2330556' first='Noah' last='Garven'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A bigger scoring lead guard can play on or off the ball seamlessly. He will fill it up with mid-range pull-ups, tough next level body control layups, euro steps and threes off the catch in bunches. He scored 15 points with limited shot attempts efficiently.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2330560' first='Braden' last='Miller'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A highly skilled power forward can score it every way. The lefty likes using hook shots, contested layups with either hand, he will take the bump to score thru contact, back you down and patiently go to work with his left. He has some advanced counter moves with either hand, rip thrus, spin move sand drop steps. He boxes out well and had a huge game with 25 points and 10+ rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2146280' first='Taj' last='Deloney'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A defensive minded pure point guard who directs the offense. He rebounds unusually well and he is a good on-ball defender. He has the speed to burn in the open court and he is a twitchy athlete. He can thread the needle to a teammate and will score with offensive rebound put backs, pull-up threes, bursts into the lane and fall aways from mid-range. He finished with 14 points 9 rebounds 4 assists and 2 steals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2625032' first='Donovan' last='Richard'] Mesquite&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A versatile wing forward can play and defend multiple positions for the Wildcats. He plays the game with a huge motor. He rebounds like a man obsessed in and out of his area and will score with rip thrus, floaters, turn around jumpers, threes off the catch with improved ball rotation and runs the floor. He finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1679274' first='Crew' last='Jorde'] Mesquite</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A highly skilled point guard who can smartly play off of the pick and roll game and will throw up the court passes. He likes to score it with floaters, tough layups, tear drops, deep threes and his pull-up is tough. He scored 12 points with 2 steals and 2 assists.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='3267471' first='Mj' last='Shipp'] Marcos de Niza&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A long wing forward can score it every way possible. He will hit the three off the catch, rip thru to the basket with either hand, he takes long strides to the basket and finishes it with runners and will score with tough transition layups. He can defend four spots for the undersized team and scored 19 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1629015' first='Drew' last='Dana'] Marcos de Niza&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A scoring lead guard may be undersized but he is is tough and highly skilled. He will make plays with smart passes to his teammates and score with blow by's to the basket, floaters, quick release triples and sharp mid-range jumpers as he can stop and pop. He scored 18 points with 3+ assists.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='3454794' first='Jd' last='Dubose'] <strong>Marcos de Niza</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>An undersized quick on quick point guard has some serious jets. The lefty is hyper competitive on defense and will rebound and collect steals with his football background. He will score with bursts to the basket and has a different gear then most. He uses the floater and will hit the three off the catch. He scored 12 points with 4 rebounds 2 steals and 1 block.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->

On Thursday January 29th I attended the match-up of 4A Marcos de Niza Padres hosting the 4A Mesquite Wildcats. Mesquite will make the playoffs most likely and Marcos has a chance of sneaking in as well.
