is done. Late last week, the Summit senior decided he'd put an end to his recruitment. The hard-nosed 6-foot-6 forward announced that he'll be continuing his academic and athletic career at the University of Puget Sound, and it was a decision he made considering everything both on and off the basketball court.
"Well firstly the most important thing to me was the academic side of things," Tompkins said. "I'm going to be a student first so I wanted to put myself in the place where I thought I'd have the best environment to keep that as the priority. As for the school and program, both all around just fit super well, the school has a beautiful campus in a great city, and talking coach Shelton and hearing about how he runs his program really made me like that side of it as well."
Tompkins dived more into how he felt things fit on the basketball court and what it will take for him to earn playing time with the Loggers. "I'm really going to have to focus on the defensive side of the ball for sure," Tompkins said. "I think that I have enough tools offensively to at minimum hold my own wherever I'm put there, but defensively I've got a ways to go before I can really have any impact, I can only play and the level I can defend, so I'm really zeroing in on that."
With his decision in the books, Tompkins' attention goes back to this season - one where he's averaged 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists and has shown some great diversity with his offensive game, scoring both inside and out. He's hoping to keep things up as Summit is looking for yet another return trip to the 5A state championship game - and more.
"We really think we have what it takes to go all the way and get a championship, but it has to be earned," Tompkins said. "There's a ton of tough competition out there, and sometimes we'll have slip ups that are pretty costly, but I think that at the end of the day we absolutely have the capacity to go head to head with any team in the state, just gotta keep working and make sure we don't take any of it for granted."
Our congratulations go out to Tompkins and his family on his commitment. He currently ranks as the #35 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2026 rankings.
