#4 Hanover High School vs. #5 Monacan High School

Final: Monacan 75, Hanover 52

The Class 4 Region B quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Hanover and fifth-seeded Monacan had all the ingredients needed. It became a showcase of Monacan's downhill attack. Their offensive efficiency shone through as the Chiefs pulled away for a convincing 75-52 victory to advance.

From the opening tip, Monacan made its intentions clear. The Chiefs attacked in transition, pushed the tempo, and relentlessly got into the paint. Whether off live-ball turnovers or quick outlet opportunities, they looked comfortable playing fast. In the half court, they spread the floor. They let their guards operate in isolation. The guards consistently got downhill. They finished through contact.

Hanover struggled to contain dribble penetration, and Monacan capitalized. A large portion of the Chiefs' scoring came from drives to the rim. They also earned points from free throw opportunities. This forced the Hawks to defend without fouling. It was a challenge for them throughout the night.

Monacan Standouts

[player_tooltip player_id='2459244' first='Amare' last='Cooper'] set the tone offensively. The dynamic guard scored 24 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting from the field. He also knocked down two triples. Cooper consistently beat defenders off the bounce and showed poise when finishing in traffic. He added four assists and handled defensive pressure well despite a few turnovers. His ability to control tempo and create advantages was a major factor in the outcome.

Tai Bowler was equally impactful, finishing with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds. Bowler thrived in space, attacking closeouts and finishing strong at the rim. He also contributed defensively with two steals, using his length and anticipation to disrupt passing lanes.

Overall, Monacan's balance and physicality stood out. They played with confidence, spacing the floor well and trusting their playmakers to create.

Hanover Notes

It was a challenging shooting night for Hanover, and the Hawks struggled to find consistent rhythm offensively. They had difficulty slowing Cooper and Bowler off the dribble and were often forced into tough defensive rotations.

Despite the loss, [player_tooltip player_id='2898028' first='Joel' last='Nicholson'] delivered a strong individual performance. Nicholson led the Hawks with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, adding three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He showed he could compete at a high level. He attacked gaps and finished through contact. He stayed aggressive throughout the game. Even as Monacan pulled away, Nicholson continued to battle

[player_tooltip player_id='2931604' first='Isaiah' last='Elkins'] contributed seven points. His performance at the free throw line was perfect, going 4-for-4. He also added five rebounds and three assists. Even when other players missed their shots, the Chiefs scored points. They did this through effort plays and taking advantage of second chances.

Hanover had stretches where they executed well in the half-court, but missed opportunities and turnovers prevented sustained runs. The Hawks will look to build on the experience, particularly in handling pressure and finishing possessions on the defensive end.

What's Next in Region B

With the win, Monacan advances to the semifinals. They will face top-seeded Varina High School. The game is on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. It's a matchup that will test Monacan's ability to maintain their downhill style. They are up against one of the region's most complete teams.

On the other side of the bracket, seventh-seeded Atlee High School will face sixth-seeded Courtland High School. Their game is at 6:30 PM on Wednesday in the other semifinal.

Region B continues to deliver competitive postseason basketball. If Monacan can replicate the physicality and efficiency they showed in the quarterfinals, they'll be a tough out moving forward.
