PHI took in a game from the Grind Session in Champaign as we don't get to see Chi-Prep much. They have a special 2029 prospect along with several other names to monitor. Minnesota Prep won the opener of the event against them 82-72. We dive into the prospects that impressed us the most!

Smith is Strong Contender for #1 Overall in 2029

We have talked a lot about names like Heard, Johnson, Jamison, Henderson, etc at the top of the board in the 2029 class in Illinois. In our first look at him at the high school level [player_tooltip player_id='2767753' first='Isaac' last='Smith'] has everything you can ask for in a potential top prospect. The size at 6'6” with long arms and plus athleticism. Against players sometimes four years older than him he was the best player on the floor as he scored 28 points and probably had close to double digit rebounds. Explosive athlete that excels in transition with his quickness and body control at the cup. Quick to the glass. Also has a clean three point stroke that he poured in four of along with a tough fadeaway out of the mid-post. Defensively he competed and blocked multiple shots inside and on the perimeter. The wing has high-major potential without a doubt!

Breakout 2027 Forward from Sweeden for Chi-Prep

In the first half the player that jumped off the floor to us was Simon Tekeste. Long and lanky face up four at 6'9”. Reading up on him a little he is originally a 2026 prospect who played last year at Hillcrest Prep in AZ before reclassifying to 2027. Also has some experience playing for the Swedish national team in international competition. Quick second jump on the offensive glass, cut a passing lane for a dunk, posted up making quick moves, and hit a three. Rebounded well in his area high pointing them as he scored 13 points.

Known Names New Places

There are a couple of players the casual hoops fan in Illinois might know in Jalil Amous and [player_tooltip player_id='2532031' first='Roosevelt' last='Thomas'] who started the season with Lincoln Park and De La Salle respectively. Amos is a skilled forward who can handle it a little and has a feathery shot which he poured in several including a couple threes for 12 points. He reclassified to 2027.

Chi-Prep Guards Across Classes

Class of 2026 5'9” point guard Marcus Jackson is a crafty southpaw that can help out a team at the small college level. Good passer with feel in the half court and transition. Soft touch finishing game around the hoop and is pesky defender. [player_tooltip player_id='2807185' first='Armany' last='Sutton'] is a 5'10” point guard that knocked in a three ball. Chad Carter is a 2030 6'4” shooting guard that has a bright future. He had 4 points getting to the line and scoring at the cup while showing flashes defensively.

Ban Yor Has Monster Performance in Victory

Prospect that was the best for Minnesota Prep was 2027 combo forward Ban Yor. He was relentless attacking downhill with sweeping slashes, floaters, and big dunks. Completely dominated the glass going for 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Versatile Pieces for Minnesota Prep

Want to mention a couple of other prospects that caught our attention for Minnesota Prep. Class of 2027 7'0” center Guot Guot is a long and thin big man that was extremely efficient scoring 14 points on 7-7 from the field. Excellent finisher out of the dunker spot and gets on the glass for second chance scores. Charles Duncan is a strong body wing that has skill with his passing and ability to use his frame scoring downhill as he had 12 points.
