SANTA FE – St. Michael's jumped out to a double-digit in the first five minutes and then staved off several comeback bids by Capital in a wire-to-wire 66-54 victory over the Jaguars Monday afternoon at Edward A. Ortiz Memorial Gymnasium.

St. Michael's improved to 6-2 overall with their fourth straight victory. Capital fell to 4-6 overall as the Jaguars lost for the third time in the last four games.

The Horsemen's full court pressure had an early effect on Capital as several turnovers led to easy St. Michael's baskets. Coming out of a timeout just past the midway point of the first quarter, consecutive Capital miscues in the backcourt led to four quick points by St. Michael's and a 17-7 Horsemen lead.

However, when Capital did manage to get the ball past midcourt and they tried to go inside, their shots were usually rejected by the taller Horsemen front line. St. Michael's led, 21-10, after the first quarter.

The Horsemen built the lead to 17 points (31-14) early in the second quarter before Capital mounted its first comeback bid. Connecting on multiple three-point shots, the Jaguars sliced the deficit to nine (37-28) with 1:10 left in the second. But a late St. Michael's basket gave them a 39-28 halftime edge.

Capital's slow offensive start at the outset of the third quarter allowed St. Michael's to build the lead back to 15 points. But then the Horsemen's offense went stagnant, and Capital took advantage to cut the lead to seven points (47-40, 49-42) with about three minutes left in the third.

A three-pointer by Capital reduced the deficit to six at 51-45 – the closest the Jaguars had bene since early in the first quarter - with just over a minute left in the third but St. Michael's Dylan Rodriguez quickly responded by draining a 3-pointer from the wing for a 10-point advantage (56-46) for the Horsemen heading into the final frame.

St. Michael's kept the Jaguars at arm's length through the out fourth quarter, building a comfortable 14-point cushion (64-50) with 3-1/2 minutes left. They cruised home from there.

St. Michael's 6-foot-4 forward Noah Redus was named Player of the Game. He dominated inside with his scoring, rebounding and shot blocking acumen after [player_tooltip player_id='2706580' first='Ryan' last='Hunt'] exited the contest late in the first quarter with a hand injury and did not return.
