The MIAA season is in full swing, and I've gotten to watch a solid number of the higher-ranked teams so far, whether in person or via stream. There are obviously too many teams and players to see them all, but I try to get out to see as many as possible (which is difficult while being a college coach, so bear with me).

Over the next few days, I'll be covering some of the most impressive players I've seen.

To start, here are some new names on my radar — these are all guys who I've never written about before and have discovered this high school season.

Pires is a knock down shooter who can make shots off the dribble, on the move, in standstill situations, and with range. The 6-foot junior transferred from Catholic Memorial this season, and he's making an immediate impact for one of the best teams in the state. He can get into the lane against most MIAA guards and kick out to teammates for open shots, but he mostly excels as an outside shooter who gets it off quickly. I could imagine him slotting in nicely to the D3 level because of his ability to make shots and pass the ball.

Sarpong is an intriguing 6-foot-7 center who completely dominates the boards and mans the middle for a well-rounded Winchester squad that could make a serious run this year. The senior has great length and is able to protect the rim and rebound as a result, but he also has some decent footwork in the lane and can punish smaller players on switches with his post moves. He also runs the floor impressively for his size. Sarpong is committed to RIT next season, but it'll take him some time to adjust to the college level. Once he does so, though, he'll be really effective.

Mercedes has an intriguing blend of size, athleticism and shooting ability. The 6-foot-3 junior has really long arms and uses them effectively for extended finishes in the paint; against St. John's, he consistently got to the front of the rim and used nice touch off the backboard. He also hit the game-winning three, which was an incredibly difficult shot on the move. He has to improve his handle and feel, but Mercedes should continue to grow into his length and will be a college prospect by the time he's a senior. Keep an eye on him moving forward, especially if you're a prep school coach.

Burbine is an all-around athlete who plays multiple sports but still understands how to be effective on the basketball court. The 6-foot senior has a beautiful shot which he releases INCREDIBLY quickly, but he's still able to shoot it with balance and accuracy consistently. When the defense overplays his shot, he's able to dart to the rim for athletic and crafty finishes against the trees. I wonder whether Burbine is better at another sport he plays (I could totally see it), but he could potentially find a D3 basketball fit if that's the direction he decides to go. Regardless, he's a key part of a Winchester squad looking to make a state final run this year.

Mendes-Stephen just moves like a basketball player. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is smooth and athletic, and he can shoot the rock from three and the mid range. He also has long arms, which he uses for extended finishes but also on-ball pickpockets defensively. I also really like the pace he plays at—slow and methodical—which seems sustainable moving forward and is suited for the next level. Mendes-Stephen is a really solid junior who could improve his game in the coming months and see his recruitment rise as a result.

Figaro has gotten multiple D1 football offers as a WR, and I can see why. The 6-foot-4 junior is a freak athlete with ridiculously long arms and incredible hops. He flies above the rim for dunks effortlessly and he glides down the floor with speed and explosiveness. He can protect the rim and rebound because of his physical tools, but he also showcased some decent footwork in the paint. Figaro is raw, but he's still extremely effective, and he's probably an awesome watch on the football field.

Delaleu is a cerebral and skilled combo-guard who runs the show for a talented Millbury squad. The 6-foot-2 junior is long and athletic, and he does a good job taking contact for soft and crafty finishes at the hoop. He's also a really unselfish and controlled passer who will make the simple play even if it doesn't show up in the stat sheet. Delaleu is skinny and looks like he could definitely still be filling out physically, and he'll be an intriguing college prospect if that happens. He'll also be a reclass candidate because of his potential, especially if it seems like he's still growing.

Raffle is a 6-foot-3 wing who moves really well for his size and is therefore quite intriguing as a college prospect. The junior can handle the ball in small spaces, he can finish athletically with both hands, and he can probably shoot (though I didn't see him take outside looks against Walpole). He also impressed me as a passer, especially when he threw a no-look dime to a teammate running the lane in transition. Raffle should be on the radar of college and prep school coaches and is a name to know in the MIAA moving forward.

The MIAA season is in full swing, and I've gotten to watch a solid number of the higher-ranked teams so far, whether in person or via stream. There are obviously too many teams and players to see them all, but I try to get out to see as many as possible (which is difficult while being a college coach, so bear with me).
