Junior Varsity Spotlight- Yorktown Tigers

Yorktown has an abundance of talented players who play the game the right way. The talent that represents this group guarantees a successful basketball program for years to come.    Princeton is a good ball handler who gets to the basket and finds teammates for easy scores. He easily broke down opposing defenses and made plays. Princeton is a flashy passer who showed a knack for throwing pin-point assists. The majority of his passes led to positive outcomes for the team. He was great at pushing the pace whenever Yorktown had the opportunity to run in transition. Princeton is an excellent finisher around the basket. Most of the points he scored came off dribble drives to the rim. Whether it was making lay-ups or knocking down floaters, Princeton was hard to guard with the ball in his hands. If the defense gave him open looks on the perimeter, he showed the confidence to take and make shots. Defensively, Princeton excelled at using his length to press Lapel guards into turnovers. He's a promising player who has an opportunity to become a focal point of the Yorktown basketball program.     I appreciated how hard this young man worked Saturday evening. Huck played the center position like most big men in today's game. He dominated smaller players in the post and showed the ability to knock down short perimeter shots. Huck was also great at making plays with his passing ability. In the match-up against Lapel, he made a couple of assists that were on the money. There was a moment in the game where he hit another Yorktown player cutting down the lane. This assist led to a easy lay-up. Huck is a hardworking player who gave maximum effort on both ends of the court. He's a great rebounder who attacked the glass with ferociousness! Whenever his Yorktown teammates missed shots, Huck was there to grab it and score. Overall, he's a solid player with a bright future in the Yorktown basketball program.     Elias plays hard on both ends of the court. He's a good ball handler who easily beat defenders off the dribble. This allowed him to make plays in the paint. He either scored or passed to his teammates for high percentage scores. Elias easily scored in the paint with either lay-ups or low post moves. He's a great rebounding forward who is capable of pushing the pace and leading fast-breaks. There was a moment in the game where he grabbed a rebound, pushed the ball up-court and scored a tough basket down the lane. He showed his versatility as a play-maker for Yorktown. Elias threw pin-point passes and knocked down perimeter jump-shots. On defense, he protected the paint, blocked shots and applied great on-ball pressure to players on the perimeter. Elias is an excellent two-way player who could be a valuable edition to Varsity next season.     Gabe is an excellent all around player. Whether it was scoring, passing, rebounding or defending, he always stayed in the flow of the game. Gabe is a good ball handler who showed the capability of scoring from all areas of the basketball court. In Saturday's game, I watched him attack the basket, knock down perimeter shots and extend his shooting range beyond the arc. Gabe is a tough guard who didn't mind battling for rebounds in the paint. He grabbed a decent amount of boards despite being smaller than opposing players. Defensively, he caused problems for Lapel guards by pressing them into mistakes. I believe Gabe will continue to be a difference maker on the basketball court. A excellent team player who makes everyone better.     Micah is an excellent rebounder who dominated the glass Saturday evening. He was a physical presence in the paint on both ends of the court. Micah is a hard-nosed player who excelled at grabbing offensive rebounds and scoring around the basket. On the defensive end of the floor, he battled Lapel players for every board he got his hands on. Ultimately, finishing the game with seven or more. On offense, Micah attacked the basket or scored on offensive put-backs near the rim. He showed the ability to score outside the paint by knocking down mid-range shots. Defensively, he pressured opposing players into turnovers with his physical play style. Micah also used his athleticism to block multiple shots in the paint. I expect him to play a major role in Yorktown's success this season.
