KEYS TO THE GAME

Lakeside Lutheran opened its season with a convincing victory over visiting Marshall in a matchup of teams expected to contend for championships in the Capitol North and Capitol South conferences. Host Lakeside Lutheran of the Capitol North used a 47-26 scoring advantage in the second half to pull away from Marshall, a member of the Capitol South. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='2025184' first='Wes' last='Rahn'] helped the Warriors to a 9-2 run to open the second half with a monster two-handed dunk and Marshall was unable to get its deficit into single digits the rest of the way. Turnovers and poor foul shooting hindered Marshall for the second game in a row. After missing 19 foul shots in its season-opening loss to Poynette earlier this week, the Cardinals missed 11 more charity tosses Friday against Lakeside Lutheran. In addition to the 24 points supplied by Rahn, Lakeside Lutheran got a big outing from senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='2500858' first='Brady' last='Wolfram'] as he finished with 20 points while scoring from deep, off the dribble and from the foul line.

STAR OF THE GAME

The No. 13-ranked player in the state's 2026 class by Prep Hoops Wisconsin lived up to that lofty standing in his first game as a senior leader for Lakeside Lutheran. In addition to scoring 24 points, Rahn finished with 12 rebounds, four dunks and three blocked shots. He added a couple of nice assists with his impressive one-handed dart passes to open teammates on the perimeter once he was double teamed in the post. In one sequence, the NCAA Division II recruit for Minnesota-Duluth snared a defensive rebound, pushed the ball down the floor with his strong ball handling skill and then got all the way to the basket to finish with a nasty left-handed, one-handed dunk. His presence on the floor on both ends is a major asset for coach Todd Jahns and the Warriors, one that could lead them back to the WIAA State Tournament come March.

EMERGING PLAYERS

Wolfram had 20 points and was perfect from the foul line, sinking all five of his attempts. Wolfram knocked down a three-point shot, got to the basket, moved the ball, took his opportunities to get to the basket and played strong defense. Each of those attributes played a big role in helping the Warriors pull away from Marshall in the second half. Wolfram's ability to score, defend and be a tough matchup for opponents due to his size and strength could land him a spot on the all-Capitol North squad at the end of the season.

A bouncy wing prospect who can hit outside shots or use his size to get to the basket, Jimenz is another key player for Lakeside Lutheran. He scored 10 points in the win over Marshall, but he is definitely capable of surpassing that total in every game due to his rapid development as a player. The Warriors will need more than just Rahn and Wolfram as scoring and strong defensive options this winter, and Jimenz likely is one of the players on the squad who figures to move into that role.

The rangy junior wing prospect was Marshall's most dependable scorer in the loss to Lakeside Lutheran. His go-to move was driving hard into the lane, stopping on a dime and then elevating over defenders for mid-range jump shots. He used that move several times against the Warriors en route to scoring a team-best 23 points. Miggins also likes to use his shiftiness and athleticism to get all the way to the basket. He visited the foul line 15 times on Friday, sinking nine. With added strength and a dependable three-point shot, Miggins figures to emerge as a good collegiate prospect over the next 12 months.

Kleinheinz clearly is Marshall's second-best scoring threat behind Miggins. A player who has contributed to many victories for Marshall over the past couple of seasons, Kleinheinz has had to step into a more prominent role on offense this year and so far he is responding well. He had 12 points before being slowed by a minor back injury on a fall late in the game with Lakeside Luthearn. Kleinheinz's ability to score off the dribble and from 12- to 15-feet will be important all winter for coach T.J. Zweifel's squad.

THE BIG PICTURE

Marshall fell to 0-2 with the loss to Lakeside Lutheran and continues play next week with a non-league game Monday at Deerfield before hosting Lodi on Friday.

Lakeside Lutheran's schedule picks up considerably next week after the Warriors played just one game during the first three weeks of the season. The Warriors host Cambridge Tuesday before traveling to Madison to take on Edgewood on Thursday. A game with Lake Country Lutheran is set for the following Tuesday. That game has special significance for Lakeside Lutheran coach Todd Jahns as Lake Country Lutheran is coached by his son, Zach. Thus far, Todd owns a 4-0 varsity record over his son.

FROM THE COACHES

From Marshall Coach T.J. Zweifel:
"In the first half, I thought we were super engaged and connected. We played together well as a team, particularly on defense. In the second half, the weakside defense was off and we turned the ball over on seven of our first 12 possessions. Offensively, we are a bit limited right now."

From Lakeside Lutheran coach Todd Jahns:
"We don't have a true point guard, which is a bit different from many of the teams I've coached in the past. We have a couple of juniors who can work their way into that role. We do have serviceable guys, though. We have four guys out there with Wes who can handle the ball. And having Wes on the floor always gives us a chance."

BOXSCORE

Marshall (29-26 = 55)
Kleinheinz 12, Ney 8, Miggins 23, Christenson Vacha 5, Reichelt 0, Alvarez Cano 0, Chadwick 3, Pauley 2, Moses 2, Connelly 0.
