The month of September provides a key chance for High Schools to get back to work and display their prospects to College Coaches. This week, I will be in Charleston, South Carolina, to visit an open practice for some of the best schools in the area. Check out this deep dive into Goose Creek High School, featuring notes on their top players and what could be in store for the team as a whole in 2025-26:

Open Practice Evaluations:

[player_tooltip player_id='1172573' first='Ja'Quell' last='Brown'] - Leading off my evaluations from Goose Creek's Wednesday Practice is [player_tooltip player_id='1172573' first='Ja'Quell' last='Brown']. Not only is Brown one of the elite prospects in this state with offers from Francis Marion, Claflin, and Dean, he is also a leader and floor-raiser for his team. It was impressive to see him go through skill work, as he put up some ridiculous numbers during a 2:00 shooting drill. He also look explosive in bursts, comfortable playing off two, and displayed good touch when attacking the rim.

[player_tooltip player_id='2561008' first='Brandon' last='Grant'] - Brandon really caught my eye with some impressive mid-range shooting during a box drill. He will have some ball-handling responsibilities for this team, likely off-the bench. Grant is capable of making reads in transition, will get to his spots under heavy ball-pressure, and can finish through contact in the paint.

[player_tooltip player_id='2920277' first='Idreyiss' last='Hoist'] - Hoist was one of the players I was most excited to see on my Charleston Open Practice Trip. I've been hearing lots of good things about him during the summer, and they were all backed up by what he displayed live. Idreyiss is a big Guard, which allows him to contribute on the defensive glass and shoot over good contests on the other end. He is rarely speed up with the ball in his hands and has a level of craftiness to his game as he looks for avenues to score the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='2385379' first='Jabari' last='Deas'] - Jabari has quickly become one of my favorite "off-the-radar" Guards in the Lower State. He has some intriguing positional size as well as good bounce, but his activity on defense and tight handle is what I enjoy watching. The lefty can be an up-and-down outside shooter, but when he's on he is a very complete player and a key weapon for this group.

[player_tooltip player_id='2896381' first='Reggie' last='Dozier'] - Rounding out the list of open practice evaluations is [player_tooltip player_id='2896381' first='Reggie' last='Dozier']. Dozier is a gifted scorer inside the perimeter, but also one of the team's best three-point shooters. When doing skill work against air, he does the little things that translate into elite play in live action. He also stood out in the scrimmage portion of practice by applying elite ball-pressure on the defensive end of the floor.

Team Takeaway:

Based on the intensity, attention to detail, and talent I saw on display at Goose Creek's Open Practice, it wouldn't be a surprise the Gators as one of the last team's standing again in 2025-26. They have a clear top dog in [player_tooltip player_id='1172573' first='Ja'Quell' last='Brown'], as well as key scoring pieces around him in [player_tooltip player_id='2920277' first='Idreyiss' last='Hoist'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2896381' first='Reggie' last='Dozier']. [player_tooltip player_id='2561008' first='Brandon' last='Grant'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2385379' first='Jabari' last='Deas'] will be important pieces in the back court, proving important depth and experience. Incoming transfer [player_tooltip player_id='2173809' first='Jarvis' last='Roper'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2516086' first='Terrell' last='Johnson'] will look to hold down the wings, but the biggest deficiency is the lack of size around [player_tooltip player_id='2573720' first='Taveion' last='Scott']. However, this could allow the Gators to play extremely fast and put heavy ball pressure on their opponents. It will be interesting to see if any other players outside of these eight can crack into the rotation and provide something different off the bench.
