On Tuesday and Wednesday (7/1-7/2) of last week, I attended the All Academic Showcase at Babson College in Wellesley, MA. There were 400+ players there and 5 courts going on at once, so it was impossible for me to see/scout every team and player. I'll be having coverage of the event throughout this week, highlighting some players who played well and probably helped their college recruitment.

With that being said, here are 5 undersized guards with major game.

Jeffries was stroking it in the game I saw him play on Tuesday. He came off a bunch of screens and was able to balance his feet consistently after moving at full speed around the court. Even after a couple misses, he shot it with confidence, which is a sign of a great shooter. He also has a super quick release and a nice-looking follow through. He'll need to grow and develop a bit more of an on-ball game if he wants to play at the D3 level, but I would bet both of those things are going to happen by looking at him. This will be a huge year for his development and physical growth.

Flemming is very undersized but really understands how to play the game and has some interesting potential if he continues to grow. The 5-foot-9 point guard is ultra quick with the ball in his hands and has an explosiveness off the dribble that you just can't teach. Once he gets to the cup, he has good elevation and body control, which allows him to finish amongst bigger players. I wouldn't be surprised to see him be one of the leading scorers for a revamped Newton South team next season. Even if he doesn't grow, the rising junior should find a D3 fit somewhere if I had to guess.

Frakes has a really nice first-step off the dribble and a strong body which he uses to keep his line on drives to the hoop. He also makes really good decisions for his teammates when the help collapses, whether it be in the half court or in transition. His shot isn't quite there yet, though, and he's a bit too content to just get a three-ball up when the offense stalls. If he can improve his release and accuracy, he could be a high D3 candidate. Right now, he's a workhorse combo-guard who can play both ends of the court and is a relentless attacker of the hoop. He still has another year to potentially grow, too.

Razi shot the lights out in the one game I watched him play. He has deep range on his shot and really gets it off quickly, which is important for a guard his size. He also had a couple very nice pull-up jumpers in the mid range where he essentially picked a spot on the floor, got to it, and rose up over the defense for a nice shot. His playmaking and passing chops are solid, too. Size will be his biggest limitation, but a good senior season could land him some solid D3 opportunities, at least at the low or mid level programs.

Donovan is lightning quick off the dribble and has the ball on a string. He was getting into the paint at will and throwing dimes left and right. He has a great sense for getting the defender on his back (putting them in jail), which gives him a couple extra seconds to make decisions in the paint. He also has nice athleticism and explosiveness at the rim despite his height. Size will limit his recruitment when the time comes, but he is definitely a D3 player at some level — some added strength would be huge for his high D3 hopes.
