All Academic Showcase: 5 underclassmen to watch

On Tuesday and Wednesday (7/1-7/2), I attended the All Academic Showcase at Babson College in Wellesley, MA. There were 400+ players there and 5 courts going on at once, so it was impossible for me to see/scout every team and player. I'll be having coverage of the event throughout the next few days, highlighting some players who played well and probably helped their college recruitment. Douglass is ridiculously intriguing and I could see him being too good for the D2 or D3 level once the time comes. The 6-foot-6 wing/forward can shoot it from three but also has some handles and verve off the dribble, and he's really effective out of the triple threat. He scored his team's first 8 points in the game I watched and I was shocked to find out he's only a rising sophomore. If he continues to grow and get quicker laterally, he could be on the radar of scholarship coaches in no time. Fascinating long-term prospect with probably the most potential of any player I saw at Babson.     Stanger was the only rising freshman I saw at the showcase, but he was one of the more impressive shooters I saw. In one game I watched, he made about 6 threes at half and had a bunch of other possessions where he operated effectively out of the pick and roll, finding teammates when the help came but getting all the way to the cup when they didn't. He's also an awesome transition passer who can see the lanes before they develop. Bright future ahead for Stanger who's probably still growing but has an awesome high school career coming up and maybe even a role this season for Milton Academy.     Sharkey plays with a joy and intensity that is hard to find. He's always smiling on the court but simultaneously working his behind off to run the floor on both ends. Despite being only a rising sophomore and on the skinnier side, he's excellent as a rebounder and awesome as a help side defender. He also makes the simple, extra pass whenever it's available and will make all the hustle plays. For a 6-foot-6 kid his age, he has a great motor and attitude, which is a great foundation for being a D3 guy when the time comes. Looks like an awesome person to play with.     O'Dea makes the right play every time and is super skilled with the ball in his hands. He won't wow you with quickness or explosiveness, but he plays at his own speed and does a great job finding cutters and teammates leaking out in transition. He also has a beautiful shot and some really nice footwork and craftiness in the lane. He's only a rising sophomore and looks VERY young and skinny, so I imagine he'll continue to develop physically and should be an awesome D3 prospect once that happens. Certain players just understand how to play the game, and he's one of them. He just needs the physical tools to follow suit.     For only a rising sophomore, Giannopoulos has some really intriguing skills — most notably his shooting. The lefty flamethrower got hot in the game I watched and was making shots off the dribble and off the catch with great consistency. He's also 6-foot-4 and has a quick release, so he was able to get a ton off. He didn't drive to the hole too much, but he's a skinny kid and was one of the youngest on the court. Once he bulks up and improves his handle a bit, he'll be a really intriguing high level D3 piece.
