The opening day of the Prep Hoops Next National Championship in Kansas City, MO, was a defensive showcase throughout the day. For the most part, the better defensive teams on the day took the victory. With many games starting pretty early in the morning, it became the "who is going to get a stop type of day." So with that, I have my starting 5 All-Defensive team for day 1 in the books.

Playing currently for MPLS Hustlers AAU Squad, I would personally have Malik as my starting big for this All-Defensive 1st team. He is the most athletic prospect in this tournament and can guard 1-5 in his age bracket. He's extremely explosive on the offensive end as well, having multiple impressive dunks on the day. On the perimeter, he does a great job of guarding small guards with his hands extended and getting good deflections as a result. He is even comfortable with leading the fast break after causing the other team's turnover. On the interior, he can quite simply rim protect with the best of them with his superior leaping ability and has the capable speed and quickness to match when in recovery mode.

Elite on-ball defender. Future would be my starting 2-guard in this lineup. He picks up full court immediately and without hesitation, regardless of whether he scores or not. Future has a defensive mindset that is impressive. He has good overall energy on that end of the floor, you can tell he prefers defense over offense despite being one of the leading scorers on his MPLS Hustlers AAU Squad, and that I believe will bode him well for, well...the future.

Junior would be my starting Power Forward in this lineup. He does a fantastic job of filling in the gaps on defense. He picks up full court, helps out in the paint, has long arms, and is very quick. He also seems like he does track & field because his speed is effortless. I feel like he could run a 100m in 10 seconds as a warm-up run.

2-way Point Guard who understands how to limit an opponent's space on the perimeter. Has great lateral movement with active hands without fouling too much, which is hard to do at his age. Has solid leadership qualities that lean towards the 'lead by example' vibe, and he has the energy of a winning attitude. Also, Corey is an Elite ball-handler at his age already. I am highly impressed with the ease with which he is able to handle the rock with either hand and shift in either direction on a dime.

My starting Defensive Small Forward in this lineup. Cameron was called upon to shut down a guy who was lighting his team up in the first half. Cameron came off the bench and answered his coach's call and did just that. He locked up said player with some impressive on-ball defense. As soon as the star player on the opposing team was even thinking about touching the ball, Cameron made sure that he would think twice about that, and that 1 decision by the coach trusting in Cameron got them (All-In Sports) at least 1 solid victory on opening day as a direct result keeping them alive for the chip on Sunday.
