initially decided on college, he knew that Linfield met his academic and career goals. The hope for the 5-foot-9 guard with the non-stop motor from Mountainside was he would also get the opportunity to play ball for the hops team as well and had been talking with the coaching staff about getting a spot on the squad. Things were thrown for a loop when there was a change in leadership but a recent discussion with Linfield Athletic Director Scott Brosius ensured a spot on his team and Reyes is all set to be a Wildcat next fall.
"It felt good, it felt like there was a heavy weight lifted off my shoulders after hearing Mr. Brosius told me I'd have a spot on the team next year," Reyes said. "(He) reassured me that that nothing changes with my recruiting and that I would have the opportunity to be student and compete as an athlete at Linfield. He was very understanding in our meeting - I felt that he wanted to make sure that we understood the whole situation and that the opportunity to be on the team would still be there even with a new coach."
While Reyes had built a good connection with he previous coaching staff at Linfield and was disappointed he wouldn't get to play for them, he's embracing the opportunity to be a part of the program. "I have been attending most all of the open gyms this spring with the team and have really felt welcomed and accepted by the current players," Reyes said. "Each run I have felt more and more a part of the team and as Mr. Brosius told me, it's really good for me as an incoming freshman who is the new guy to take advantage of working with the guys. And to be honest my thoughts on having to adapt to new coach is nothing different, I'll still have to come, show up and work hard, do whatever the coach needs of me, and follow and trust whatever they see fit."
It shouldn't be hard to incorporate Reyes for any coaching staff as the senior guard wrapped up his senior season as one of Mountainside's team leaders on both ends of the floor. In earning Third Team All-Metro League honors, he averaged 10.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.8 steals and leaves the Mavericks program with plenty of memories.
"The way my senior ended was tough, it hurt to end my career on a buzzer beater, but I wouldn't have changed it any other way," Reyes said. "I loved the group of guys I had this year and I'll remember them and this year for a long time."
Our congratulations go out to Reyes and his family on his commitment. He finished as the #28 player in the final Oregon Class of 2025 rankings.
