Over the weekend on April 26- 27th, the annual Jayhawk Jam took place in Lawrence, KS @ The Lawrence Sports Pavilion. It showcased some impressive AAU young guns who have command over the court, their opponents, and the rock. The skill level of this crop of young leaders that I got to witness was remarkable. Super impressed with this kid. Ellis jumps out at you when watching him on the court. He is a lefty with perfect form on his jumpshot and a sweet follow-through. Plays with maximum effort. Has handles for days and true passion for the game. The thing that I noticed right away, besides the sweet lefty stroke, was the fact that despite him and his team having a significant lead over their opponent (Midtown), Ellis, instead of celebrating a successful jumper he immediately pressed up on defense for a full court attack in search of a steal. It is rare at this age to have fundamentals like that. Also, Ellis seems to understand already the importance of having good balance on his release, even when his body is slightly off balance. Not sure if that's natural or not, but it stood out. Most kids around his age have no concept of that when making a move towards the basket or while taking a shot on the perimeter. This floor general is the real deal.

14 y.o. and already can play in a phone booth. Has true joy and passion for the game. Brings his basketball with him and dribbles everywhere he goes. During their Day 1 game at the top of the key, Luther did a spin move with just his pivot foot with the ball that was immediately followed by a hesi, into a strong left hand power dribble to the basket. The defender was completely lost before Luther had even taken his dribble yet. I was so impressed by the move that I can't even remember if he even made the shot or not, it was that good. It is rare to see old school pivot moves like that from someone this young. In fact, this was the only time this weekend I saw someone actually use their pivot foot as an attack. Not to mention the fact that he is already super comfortable with his handle with both hands and is deadly from anywhere because of it.

Blaysen is a bucket getter. Has true joy for the game, when him and his team wasn't playing, he spent his time playing ball on the other open courts. He plays non-stop and I can see this kid playing multiple positions as he is sure to likely be well over 6ft tall based on his frame already. Currently closer to [player_tooltip player_id='2557749' first='[player_tooltip player_id='2557300' first='5'10' last='']' last=''] right now and is only 13 y.o. He plays with the 14 y.o. so he is already ahead of his class.

@ about 5'6 and growing fast, Brycen is a true point with a very unselfish game. High IQ guard that plays hard and implements the game plan to a tee. His Wichita Wildcats AAU squad went undefeated at the Jayhawk Jam in the 14U division and this kid was a key cog. In one of their day 1 games, Brycen took a charge on the fast break under the rim that had me very impressed at his timing and his thought process during a quick-bang reaction defensive play. This was the only purposeful charge takin all weekend and it came from a 14 y.o. Wow! This kid gets it.

2-way guard that is the primary scorer and #1 defensive stopper. Couldn't find a weakness on this kid and he is only 13y.o. Got good coaches around him so whatever weaknesses he does have won't be for long and he seems to stay humble about his wins and losses. Never the biggest guy on the court, at least not yet physically but is usually the best on at least one side of the ball on any given night.

@ [player_tooltip player_id='2557749' first='[player_tooltip player_id='2557300' first='5'10' last='']' last=''] and growing, Sanchez is a big point guard for FT 2029 Black AAU squad who is very unselfish, can pass the rock and does a good job of not rushing the offense too much. First impression of this kid was, "Now he can play!" Matthew seems to just understand things on the court. You can tell by watching him that this was not just a get-away for him. On Day 1, he was one of the leaders in scoring but he seems to have more to his game. I can see him doing other things as well, like leading a break.
