RIO RANCHO – Saturday's Class 5A first round matchup between Atrisco Heritage and Cleveland at the Thunderdome was billed as a marquee matchup between two of the best players in the state – Atrisco Heritage guard [player_tooltip player_id='1176301' first='Latavious' last='Morris'] and Cleveland G [player_tooltip player_id='1326930' first='Remy' last='Albrecht'].

However, it was a Storm sophomore who stole the show.

[player_tooltip player_id='2832983' first='Brycen' last='Bowie'] hit 8 3-pointers, several in the fourth quarter, and finished with a game-high 26 points as Cleveland broke open a close game with a late surge to eliminate the Jaguars, 91-75, and set up a quarterfinals clash with Hobbs Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. at the Pit in Albuquerque.

Albrecht finished with 25 points in the high-tempo game, many coming on fearless drives to the basket or at the free throw line, while [player_tooltip player_id='2085714' first='Ajay' last='Vigil'] had 19 points and [player_tooltip player_id='2569360' first='Titus' last='Sutton'] 17.

Cleveland outscored Atrisco, 23-12, over the final six minutes or so of the fourth quarter to pull away. The Storm led, 70-65, midway through the fourth quarter when Bowie intercepted a pass at midcourt and quicky drained a 3-pointer.

After Atrisco scored on a layup by [player_tooltip player_id='1687826' first='Kadarious' last='Sims'], Sutton drove for a layup and was fouled. He hit the free throw for a 76-67 lead. Atrisco managed to slice the deficit to five points (76-71) when Vigil made a 3-pointer. But again the Jaguars responded with a 3-pointer by Morris to make 79-74 with 1:44 left.

The rest of the game was dominated by Cleveland.

Coming out of a timeout, Bowie drilled a 3-pointer from the wing as the Thunderdome crowd roared to give the Storm an 82-74 lead with 1:25 left. He quickly added another 3-pointer for a 85-75 lead to extinguish Atrisco's comeback hopes and the Storm closed it out from there.

Midway through the third quarter, Atrisco Heritage had sliced a six-point halftime deficit (43-36) down to one point at 50-49 on a 3-pointer, compelling Cleveland to call a timeout.

Back-to-back triples and a conventional 3-point play by Sutton restored Cleveland's 10-point lead (59-49). Five points was as close as the Jaguars would get the rest of the way.

Atrisco scored the first seven points of the game, the final three on a corner jumper from beyond the arc, to force an early timeout from Cleveland. The Storm rallied to even the score at 19-19 by the end of the first quarter. By the midway point of the second quarter, Cleveland had built a 31-23 lead on a conventional 3-point play by Sutton, who powered to the hoop for the basket and was fouled.

Class 3A: Santa Fe Indian School 81, Cobre 58

Dominating from beginning to end, Santa Fe Indian School beat Cobre, 81-58, Saturday afternoon in the Capitol City. The decisive stretch same in the first six minutes of the second period when SFIS outscored Cobre, 12-0, to begin to pull away. Cobre was held scoreless in the frame until a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left before halftime.

SFIS turned a 19-12 advantage after the first quarter into a 35-22 halftime lead. The Braves got hot from beyond the arc in the latter stages of the third quarter and led by as many as 19 points with one minute left in the stanza. Cobre didn't seriously threaten in the fourth quarter as the SFIS lead grew to as many as 25 points in the final minutes.

Cobre struggled all game with SFIS's superior speed in the open court. The Braves frequently released a man downcourt whenever Cobre attempted a shot, a strategy which led to several long passes and easy layups on the other end for SFIS. Cobre coaches could be heard yelling at their players to get back on defense, but they too often failed to heed to advice.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='2693613' first='Zavin' last='Guck'] scored 28 points for Cobre while younger brother [player_tooltip player_id='2714599' first='Izon' last='Guck'] had 15. Both players return in 2025-26, offering the Indians hope for a successful campaign next winter.
