The gym at Ypsilanti Lincoln always has an electric atmosphere when district play comes to town. That was the case again in a good matchup between the host team and Canton. It was an entertaining and well played game with Ypsilanti Lincoln pulling out a 41-37 win and earning another District Championship. I left the gym very excited about the guard play that I saw last night. Let's look at some of the guards that stood out in the title game.

I've written about him repeatedly this season, and with good reason. Wimberly has proven his game and did it again last night. He attacked the rim, but showed patience in doing so. Wimberly hit 2 feet in the paint and used his pivot foot to create an easy lay in. He also showed the ability to initiate contact and play off of it when he attacked his defender, shrugged him off and finished with a layup. Wimberly showed a nasty inside-out dribble move that forced a foul out of his defender. He showed a lot of fire and grit in this game as well. Wimberly hit the floor for a critical loose ball and had the smarts to call a timeout and keep possession. He also hit a dagger layup to put Lincoln up 4 with 7.8 seconds left.

Hurley honestly isn't a player that I've seen and evaluated a ton. After seeing him last night, he's severely under ranked. Hurley has nice positional size and strength and is way more athletic live and close up. He came out confident and firing, hitting a couple deep wing triples. Hurley hit open space by flashing baseline and earned a flip in bucket. Later in the game, he showed an impressive speed burst with the ball and finished at the rim with a layup.

Blakita looked like an inside linebacker in a basketball jersey. And he knew how to use that strength and frame too. On multiple occasions, Blakita went up with power near the rim. He was able to go up through defenders and draw a foul, I believe 3 different times. Blakita added a corner 3 as well.

Reed was very valuable for Ypsilanti Lincoln in the championship victory. He was a solid ball handler that could pick his pace. Reed showed some crafty handles, creating a path to the rim and finishing with a layup. He also had a nice baseline take. Reed was able to run the floor and picked up a couple of high percentage transition scores. He applied half court pressure and forced a huge tie up late in the game.

Winstel was definitely a key player for the Canton squad. He had good handles and didn't over dribble and pound the floor with it. Instead, he moved the ball and tried to make high percentage plays and passes. Winstel had a nice looking catch and shoot triple from the corner and had an impressive right to left drive that he finished with a bucket.
