got the chance to play with and against some very high-level competition. He also had the opportunity to play in front of college coaches and a number of them were intrigued with his athleticism, length, and potential. Several high-level national junior college programs came calling but after looking over his options, Byas decided to follow the Oregon pipeline to Arizona and recently made a commitment to Eastern Arizona.
“Compared to the other schools they were closer to home and they are just a winning program that has history of getting guys to the next level which is where I want to be and where I can continue to get better and grow so that I am ready,” Byas said. “They are also familiar with Oregon guys and Coach Turner was also one of the coaches to actually drive and come watch me play which was a big part of why I decided to go there.”
The Gila Monsters have been a destination for Oregon prep basketball players for almost two decades, and head coach Cameron Turner has continued to make bringing in guys from the Beaver State a priority in his recruiting efforts. He had the opportunity to watch Byas play with RA Prep when they traveled to Arizona for a Grind Session event and it there the connection was made. Byas feels he’ll fit into the system immediately but also understands there’s plenty of room to improve.
“I know they like shooters and people who can play off the catch and that is something I am very good at so I feel it should be a smooth transition,” Byas said. “I really want to improve my rebounding and just communicating more on the court, but I’m also working on getting bigger this summer and adding some more pounds while I’m there which is the most important.”
Byas is one of a few Oregon natives who decided to take a different route when it came to high school. After spending his first two years moving up the ranks at Jesuit, he and his family made the decision to transfer to RA Prep and it’s a move he’s grateful for.
“It really helped me expand my game and gain more confidence,” Byas said. “It also gave me a good platform for me to display my talent and get seen by college coaches but just really playing against some of the top players in the country and bigger and more athletic guys helped me with that as well.”
Our congratulations go out to Byas and his family on his commitment. He currently ranks as the #17 player in the recently finalized Class of 2025 rankings.
