Over the past couple of weeks, I've had the opportunity to watch games purely for the enjoyment of competition, and as teams enter the district schedule, one thing has become clear to me: sometimes, the star player won't have the best game due to the opposing team's defense. In these situations, someone needs to step up and make a significant contribution. This might involve stepping up to rebound, hitting a crucial shot, or defending the opposing team's best player. There are several players who fit this description, and what's impressive about them is that they could easily be starters on another team, but instead, they're content with being role players. They have a deep understanding of the bigger picture and recognize the importance of teamwork. These players are happy to contribute to their team's success, even if it means taking a backseat to the star players. They embody the selfless spirit of teamwork and are essential to their team's success.

Devin Burton is one of the craftiest post players in the state. On most nights, he is undersized, but that does not stop him from changing the game. He is a constant threat on both ends of the court. He does not back down from a challenge, and he is going to win in one-on-one situations. He is a master of the art of rebounding and positioning under the goal. He averages almost 14 points per game, and all of his scoring comes from within the paint. His weapon of choice is the pro hop, and knowing that he wants to get to it will still not aid the defense in stopping him. He is a hooper who enjoys the physicality of the game and works until the job is complete. Burton is a double-double machine and is a big reason why Lincoln Prep is a top-three 1A team in the state.

Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='2883493' first='Ahmad' last='Smith'] is making a name for himself with his impressive scoring ability. Last week, he dropped 31 points and 7 three-pointers against Castor, showcasing his smooth handle and on-court confidence. Smith thrives in pressure situations and can score from anywhere on the court, demonstrating a rare ability to perform under bright lights.

A versatile player, Smith excels on and off the ball, making him a valuable asset to his team. His accuracy from beyond the arc and ability to score in transition earn him the label of a true three-point sniper and downhill scorer. With his fearlessness and joy for the game, Smith is a player who can take over contests and make big plays when it matters most. As his high school career continues, Smith is a player to watch, and college scouts would be wise to take notice of this talented young player who is sure to make a significant impact in the years to come.

Ponder is a secret weapon in every game because he is on a team full of big-name players. His skill set is about as versatile as you will see from a player with his size. In recent weeks, I have just watched him hit big shot after big shot, and even though those shots are not at the end of the game, they are timely shots that make a big difference in the game. This proved true in matchups versus Ruston and Wossman, just to name a couple. He is a dead-eye shooter, and the corner three is his specialty, but Ponder is also efficient around the goal as an offensive and defensive threat. Any coach that is looking for a sharp shooter can stop right at Ponder. He is a hardworking student of the game and does whatever it takes to win.

[player_tooltip player_id='2307975' first='Niran' last='Ogunyemi'] is a true stock riser in the state, and his hard work on the court is a key factor in Captain Shreve's reputation as one of the toughest teams in the state. As a three-level scorer, Niran is a versatile threat, but it's his defensive prowess and high-IQ basketball that truly set him apart. Despite being an undersized forward on a team with a bunchof feisty guards, Niran is strong enough to hold his own, and his ability to handle the ball and shoot from beyond the arc makes him a valuable asset.

What's more, Niran's energy and strong frame allow him to move laterally with ease, enabling him to play effectively in the guard position. He's a winner, a hard worker, and a 100% competitor who doesn't wait for others to bring the intensity - he's fully invested in the game from the opening tip. Niran is the type of player who does all the small things that don't always show up in the box score, but are crucial to a team's success. His work ethic, competitiveness, and intelligence make him a valuable contributor to Captain Shreve's success, and a player who is sure to continue rising up the ranks.

Carson Carrico is a player who is worth taking the time to watch. He is a feisty guard who consistently leaves his heart on the floor. Unlike some players, Carrico does not understand the concept of slowing down or taking breaks to conserve energy, as he gives the game 100% effort on every single play. This unwavering dedication is what makes him so enjoyable to watch, and it's a key factor in his rapid rise as a player. Carrico is a three-level scorer who can showcase a different skillset in every game, as he takes what the defense gives him. He will dive for every loose ball, take defensive risks, and hit a three-pointer all in the same possession. As a vocal leader and blue-collar ball player, he is a nuisance for opposing players to deal with. Over his last five games, Carrico has averaged 22 points per game and has knocked down 15 three-pointers during that stretch. Now that the tough guard has found his footing, expect to see even more impactful play from him during district competition.
