There were a number of remarkable individual performances around the state in the opening week of action. Below we take a look at eight of the top Class 4A showings from the first seven days of action in a series that we plan to continue throughout the year, hopefully without too many repeats!

2025 SG [player_tooltip player_id='2721768' first='Grady' last='Sigrist'] (Norwalk) -- 28 points (7-18 FG, 4-7 3P, 10-12 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, 1 block [vs. Pella]

With no Born on the Warriors roster for the first time in a long time, they need someone to step into a primary scoring role, and if his showing against the Dutch was any indication, maybe that person will be Sigrist. He showed his ability to play on and off the ball, frequently getting to the free throw line as well as knocking down shots from deep off the catch.

2025 PG [player_tooltip player_id='1381415' first='Trey' last='McKowen'] (Kennedy) -- 28 points (8-13 FG, 3-4 3P, 9-10 FT), 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals [vs. Roosevelt]

One of the best players in the state, Kennedy is McKowen's team this season, and he was excellent in the Cougars' season-opening win over Roosevelt on both ends of the floor. He's one of the best perimeter defenders in the state, moving his feet well and using his quick hands to create chaos, and his ability to score and facilitate at a high level will keep the Cougars among the state's elite this season.

2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1381407' first='Kiki' last='Deng'] (Valley) -- 25 points (7-14 FG, 1-4 3P, 10-12 FT), 10 rebounds, 2 assists [vs. Southeast Polk]

The two-time defending champs will need players like Deng to step up a bit this season following a pair of losses to transfer, and Deng shined against Southeast Polk, playing downhill both in the halfcourt and in transition and either scoring or getting to the free-throw line. He was also great on the glass, notching himself a double-double.

2025 SG [player_tooltip player_id='1759897' first='Kyle' last='Cason'] (Dallas Center-Grimes) -- 32 points (11-25 FG, 1-7 3P, 9-11 FT), 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal [vs. ADM]

One of those aforementioned transfers from Valley, Cason showed what he's capable of in DCG's loss to ADM in the opening week, exploding for 32 points, and he didn't even shoot it well from the 3-point line, generally one of his strengths. Of course he's not going to average 32 points a game, but this showing showed what he can be capable of in a starring role.

2026 PF [player_tooltip player_id='1643192' first='Landon' last='Davis'] (Waukee Northwest) -- 10 points (5-7 FG), 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 9 blocks [vs. Centennial]

One of the top defensive players in the state, Davis came one block shy of notching a triple-double in the Wolves' blowout win over Centennial. A rangy, athletic 6-8 forward with impeccable timing as a shot blocker, he was a force in the paint on both ends of the floor.

2025 PF [player_tooltip player_id='1759895' first='Trevin' last='Jirak'] (Valley) -- 22 points (11-19 FG, 0-2 3P), 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks [vs. Ankeny]

Jirak showed that he's an elite passer for a big man at the state tournament in March, helping lead Valley to their second straight title. And with the transfer of Curtis Stinson Jr, look for Jirak to have the ball in his hands more this season. He sees the floor incredibly well and is a really skilled passer who likes to get his teammates involved. He's also a force around the bucket with great footwork and touch. He dominated the painted area on both ends of the floor in the Tigers' win over Ankeny.

2026 SG [player_tooltip player_id='1977422' first='Rio' last='Aguirre'] (Ankeny) -- 22 points (6-16 FG, 0-3 3P, 10-12 FT), 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal [vs. Centennial]

Aguirre is a versatile three-level scorer who can fill it up in bunches, and he showed against Centennial that he may be looking to attack the rim a bit more this season after serving as more of an off-ball shooter as a sophomore. He got to the line in bunches, was great on the glass, and flashed some improved playmaking and vision.

2028 SF [player_tooltip player_id='2523901' first='Halbert' last='Jackson'] (Cedar Rapids Washington) -- 22 points (10-21 FG, 0-4 3P, 2-7 FT), 15 rebounds (11 offensive), 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block [vs. Marion]

One of the state's elite freshmen in what looks like a loaded 2028 class, Jackson had a tremendous opening week, with this showing against Marion being one of a few great outings. He's a great athlete who can score from all three levels, and his athleticism and size allow him to dominate the glass when he wants to, as he did against the Wolves, pulling down an eye-popping 11 offensive rebounds.
