As we gear up for the school basketball season with only a little under a month left, there are many teams looking to make a statement. Several new teams could be in the mix with the districts realigned this year and many competitive rivalries will also renew per usual matchups. Let's closely examine some teams who will certainly be contending for a top district spot this season and feature some outstanding prospects.

St. Francis Episcopal features a dynamic lineup this year of 2025 prospects looking to increase their stock and make a name for themselves. The core is built up of guards [player_tooltip player_id='1227000' first='John' last='Laboy'], forwards [player_tooltip player_id='1359644' first='Christian' last='Hodge'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2559062' first='O'Marion' last='Harvey'], and anchored by post man [player_tooltip player_id='1225689' first='Nigel' last='Walls']. This group features dynamic shooting and ability to beat a team scoring from all over the floor. They use their length and athleticism to their advantage on the defensive side of the ball and the transition game is very efficient as well. Walls possesses the ability to shoot the long-range ball at an efficient clip and beat the defense with several post moves. Laboy is an aggressive on ball defender who knows how to play passing lanes well and get steals in a matter of moments and he can also hit midrange shots and drive to the rim at will. Harvey is effective off the dribble and knows how to get to his spots and be open, while Hodge is a tenacious rebounder and hustle player who is willing to do anything the teams need from him to win the game. All of these athletes are class of 2025 and with this core, the team should make a deep run.

The Eagles have shown that they know how to build a solid and fundamental team year after year and they will be right back at the top of district this year. Key players include LA Tech commit 2025 [player_tooltip player_id='2458771' first='Jaylen' last='Fenner'], 2026 guard [player_tooltip player_id='1778906' first='Adam' last='Boyd'], and 2026 wing [player_tooltip player_id='1778917' first='Zayson' last='Salanoa']. Salanoa is a knockdown shooter from long range and can make timely buckets to swing momentum, Boyd is a key defensive stopper who can lock up anybody he steps on the court with, and Fenner is a great all around hooper who can make things happen on both ends. [player_tooltip player_id='2557326' first='Jase' last='Mason'], [player_tooltip player_id='2557328' first='Jesus' last='Valenzuela'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2558174' first='Jonathan' last='Kekeocha'] will all be expected to play major roles this season as well and provide big sparks off the bench and in crunch time. The Eagles are looking to compete with a deep roster as always and coach David Martinez will have them competing for a deep playoff run as usual.

EOP has a wide variety of weapons for this season and Coach Anthony Willis will look to use those to his advantage greatly. St. Mary's commit [player_tooltip player_id='2556776' first='Raken' last='Vargas'] will be running the point guard slot with his deceptive speed and playmaking ability, while [player_tooltip player_id='2555444' first='Jackson' last='Stoneburner'] will be locked in at either the two or the three as a knockdown sniper from deep. Quentin Stewart gives the guard spot depth as he is a great slasher when he goes to the basket and can also shoot well off the dribble and is a great facilitator. [player_tooltip player_id='2554860' first='Samuel' last='Mosquera'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2554938' first='Christian' last='Chambers'] will be locking down the middle as they figure to be the post bigs who will be relied on for rim protection. Let's not forget probably the single biggest key factor going into this season, hybrid wing/post [player_tooltip player_id='1337209' first='Donovan' last='Fears']. Fears shows great patience and ability to score on offense, where his shot can stretch the floor and his driving to the basket either gets consistent buckets or trips to the free throw line. His reaction is key on defense, and he can rise up to block shots at the basket as well as come away with key rebounds and get out in transition. I look for his development to improve even more this year as he has been on a roll since before AAU this summer. With so many deployable weapons especially in the rotation, the Kings figure to be a tough matchup for anyone who comes their way.

Shadow Creek will be a big-time player at the top of their district this year with all the key foundation pieces of their team that return. Highly ranked guard [player_tooltip player_id='1358204' first='Michael' last='Collins'] will be the main piece, as he makes it looks so easy scoring the basketball every time he is on the court. He runs the offense with such precision and decision making. [player_tooltip player_id='1358209' first='Bryce' last='Jackson'] will slot in well next to Collins as the other primary ballhandler and he can go get a bucket or set up his teammates well anytime his team needs a score. Jackson has deceptive athleticism and can get to the basket at will. Julian Cullier and [player_tooltip player_id='2416678' first='Adin' last='Lewis'] can also provide some key ballhandling and scoring on offense as well, but they are both great defenders and will play passing lanes effectively to the advantage of their team. Look for the Sharks to be a serious threat again this year not just in district, but in the city.
