On Monday I watched the 7th annual Southwest Basketball Camp at the Phhacility in Phx.

120 players on 12 teams of 10 battle for two days with college coaches and scouts on hand to take in the action.

I watched all 12 teams play on the main court with six back to back games.

Here were the opening night standouts (Taking 1 player off of each team)

Team CAL: [player_tooltip player_id='1542272' first='Michael' last='Payne'] Cholla

The quick scoring point guard defended and made shots. He drilled some deep three point shots off the dribble and hesitated and got to the basket. He made the opposing guards uncomfortable with his quick feet and stronger base.

Team Stanford: [player_tooltip player_id='1804624' first='Elijah' last='Hayeems'] Phhoenix Prep

A bigger wing forward is a sharp shooter. He hit a bunch of threes off the catch but also drove the lane with a decent handle. He got on the glass with his size and he is a sneaky good rebounder and passer.

Team ASU: [player_tooltip player_id='2364383' first='Deshawn' last='Gory'] Phhoenix Prep

A very tall wing showed energy on both sides of the court. He is also in motion moving without the ball and makes shots from deep. He will give a hard shot fake and dribble right by his defender and flush it down easily. His effort on defense was noticed.

Team AZ: [player_tooltip player_id='1274847' first='Adam' last='Hubbard'] AZ Compass Prep

A long scoring combo guard made some plays for others but rebounded, played defense and scored. He hit multiple triples off the catch and pull with range. His length bothered his opponents and was one of the top rebounding guards on the night.

Team Oregon: [player_tooltip player_id='2219497' first='Jaylon' last='Dean-Vines'] Phhoenix Prep

A freaky athletic guard plays on or off the ball seamlessly. He had probably two of the best five dunks of the day with his elbows way above the rim. He made deep shots off the dribble and has a polished pull-up.

Team Oregon State: [player_tooltip player_id='1323290' first='Mason' last='Magee'] Basha

Another top of the food chain athlete. He had some jaw dropping dunks with power. He changes speeds so quickly, and the defense struggles to react quickly enough and then it is too late. He bursts by and is at the rim. His defense really stood out and is the early Camp MOP.

Team USC: [player_tooltip player_id='2357161' first='Jayden' last='Standifer'] Cholla

The big man scored inside plus hit some fall aways outside of the paint. He is a strong two handed rebounder and has great hands to catch the ball to score or kick it to a teammate.

Team UCLA: [player_tooltip player_id='1598395' first='David' last='Leszczynski'] Paradise Honors

David caught fire from all three levels. He hit step backs from mid-range, he posted up, he changed his speed to get past his defenders and made tough shot after tough shot.

Team WASH: [player_tooltip player_id='2337274' first='Brig' last='Bowden'] Mesa

The big sophomore brings toughness, skill and defense. He will score facing up or with his back to the basket with drop steps. He is a quicker leaper and will alter or block shots plus rebound at a high level.

Team WSU: [player_tooltip player_id='2404557' first='Tyson' last='Dobbins'] Desert Christian

A natural scoring combo guard will make the extra pass and move the ball but he is wired to score. He scores with threes off the catch, quick drives down the lane and crafty finishes.

Team UTAH: [player_tooltip player_id='2134381' first='Daniel' last='Ortiz'] Palo Verde

The senior guard played with poise and played with a purpose. He got to his spots with step back threes, floaters, mid-range jumpers and he just plays at his own pace. He will move the ball when needed unselfishly.

Team COL: [player_tooltip player_id='1297427' first='AJ' last='Thomas'] Eduprize

The bigger, strong scoring lead guard did what he wanted in the last game. He has a super shifty handle and it is like he has skates on. He uses his frame to get downhill and scores thru the contact. He also can step back off the dribble and shoot it from both levels. He also ripped a couple pockets clean.
