Basketbull HOF National Invitational: Sunday Standouts Part One

This was a really fun tournament, with tons of under-the-radar players showcasing their talents. Here is part one of Sunday's standouts. He was consistently getting into the paint all weekend – showcasing an array of dribble moves and hesitations – both in the half-court and in transition. His pull-up elevation also allows him to get to his spots in the mid-range and convert easy ones. Defensively, Basson was one of the best on-ball defenders at the tournament, exhibiting excellent hands and lateral foot-speed. He can push the pace in transition and elevate on the break, but he can also find offense through post ups and offensive rebounds. His older brother, Zach Matulu, is a freshman at Albany, so I could see Marcelin developing in a similar way. He's just a good, do-it-all player who should be garnering some D2 interest and a lot of D3 interest. He was non-stop talking – both to teammates and opponents – and rim-running until his legs were falling off all weekend. Offensively, he spends most of his time in the dunker-spot but can crash for offensive boards and make his presence known as a cutter and little-things guy. He doesn't need to be balanced to hit his runner and he can hit it off a variety of dribble moves and pickups. Showed somewhat of an ability to shoot from the outside but definitely prefers to get into the paint with his change-of-pace crossover package. Fun player to watch, and definitely has a little edge to him. He does an awesome job using his off-hand to control defender's arms, and he also has solid quickness to blow by more physical defenders. Once he enters the paint, he's got a good pull-up mid-range game that is consistent and sustainable, and can also make the right play for teammates if the defense comes to help. Oh, and he strokes it from three. He was flying off of screens all day and knocking down contested threes, and he showed a good general understanding of where to be and how to get open. He also has some quickness offensively and is very willing to make the extra pass for his teammates. Could find a home somewhere at the D3 level if a coach is looking for a guard who can stretch the defense and be a solid ball mover. At 6-foot-5, he's long and has an incredibly pretty shot release. He's still working on his range, but if the sophomore can continue to improve, I'll be very curious what his scholarship recruitment will look like as he grows and gets stronger. Bear-Lowen is also a workhorse on both ends and never stops moving, making him a nice role-player piece.
