Saturday 15U Standouts: Mayhem in the Plex

He uses his size to dominate the paint against his opponents. He's excellent at absorbing contact and staying focused enough to finish through it. Wood knows how to get to his spots and moves well without the ball. He has a solid rapport with his guards which they use collectively to get buckets. He doesn't shy away from running the floor and he has the ballhandling skills to take it coast to coast himself from time to time. On the other side of the ball, Wood provides a dominant defensive presence in the paint. He eats his opponent's shots and sends them flying anywhere but near the rim. With the way he denies shots and cleans the glass, he's extremely effective at limiting second-chance point opportunities for the opposition. When he comes in the game, the opposing team tends to start to settle for long jumpers or three-point attempts. I was blown away by his energy level and general non-stop hustle throughout the game. Walker does all the right things - follows his shots, runs the floor every time, sets MEAN screens, and plays relentless defense. He's confident and determined - never hangs his head from a mistake or missed opportunity - he has the u0022onto the next playu0022 mentality you want in your star players. He has fast hands, often creating steals and disrupting passing lanes on the defensive end. He can stop a fast break in it's tracks and his skills simply make him look bigger, stronger, and quicker than his competition. On top of that, Walker's a great passer and finds his teammates with ease. He stays vocal on both ends and he listens - at one point his coach hollered out to him to make a particular adjustment and he responded with immediate action. It's scary that Walker is only heading into his sophomore season because he's going to get even better than this. He shows no fear on the hardwood - I'd often see him running toward contact throughout the game. He's an excellent finisher in the paint and he's smart with the way he observes the floor and thinks on his feet. He can drive in either direction and he creates enough pressure on the defense that there's always a teammate open. His passing ability is fantastic - underhand, overhead, cross-court, there were times he reminded me of a quarterback leading his squad into battle. His passes are quick with laser-like accuracy and his teammates are always ready to execute. He has quick hands and he'll swipe the ball away from his opposition multiple times a game. He never takes a play off - even when his opponent has numbers on a fast break - you'll find Siah sprinting toward the other end vying for a LeBron-like chase-down block from behind. He handles the ball well like its second nature, which shows that he's putting in solid work on his own time. He can drive to the rim in either direction and he opens up the floor significantly for his teammates. He's a fantastic shooter and will punish his opponents from the three-point line if they give him any amount of space. Holbert is a great communicator on the floor and knows how to lead the charge for his team - often directing teammates to their spots and getting them high-percentage opportunities. He's got fast hands and can lock his man down on defense, frequently creating turnovers and converting them to buckets. He knows how to wow the crowd as well - one of the prettiest plays I saw on the day was his up and under reverse layup against multiple defenders which he - of course - made look easy. He's got all the ingredients to develop into a strong leader and potential superstar. I thought it may have been a hot streak in one game at first, but I watched Nathan in multiple games and he never stopped impressing. He leads the charge for his team down the floor and he's got great court vision to identify an open lane for himself or a streaking teammate for an easy bucket. He creates havoc on the defensive end, consistently creating steals and disrupting opposing passing lanes. Kwakye has no fear - or he at least makes it appear that way. He has no hesitation before an open shot and knows how to make quick decisions in order to benefit his team. He drives in the paint toward contact regularly and knows how to get to the free throw line and create a rhythm for himself if needed. He's extremely even-keeled - never too high, never too low, always positively impacting the game.
