Basketball trainers Wills Lee and Kole Swiss were on site at the Brimley High School Gym to put many of them to the test. Players were also run through a gambit of agility and speed drills to showcase their athleticism. We focused our attention on some underclassmen, who look to be big difference-makers on their respective varsity basketball teams next season. Landon Gahn (featured image) was one of a few area freshmen on-site from an up-and-coming young Cheboygan Chiefs team.
Landon Gahn
Landon Gahn
Landon Gahn showed up today in a big way. His ball handling skills were very impressive and he played lock-down defense all afternoon. He was able to stick to his opponent and keep him from getting anywhere near the basket. On the offensive side of the court, he was able to drive, dribble, or shoot with ease. As this young man physically develops over the next few years, I would expect to see a lot more good things from him as he will be one of the core ball handlers on a very good and very young Cheboygan Chiefs Varsity team.
Jackson Clark
Jackson Clark
Jackson Clark was another featured combo guard at today’s camp. Jackson did an excellent job taking care of the basketball and patiently brought the ball up the court with minimal turnovers. He has a calm demeanor about him that makes him an excellent floor general and is a very patient ball handler. Jackson also has a very smooth shot and is able to find himself open as he is excellent while moving without the basketball.
Jack Cifelli
Jack Cifelli
I wanted to list Jack Cifelli as a center on my scouting report, but I saw a lot of impressive things out of him from 15+ feet out that will lead him to be very effective in the 4/5 position. Jack’s low post footwork led him to score often from the block and he even impressed me with his used of the backboard on regular occasion. (Something that seems elementary, but often gets lost by a lot of kids.) According to those close to him in his workout circle, Jack has been focusing a lot on upper and lower body conditioning, and today it showed. He has already improved immensely since the completion of his school basketball season, and with continued conditioning, he should be a force in the paint next season.
Drake Mayer
Drake Mayer
Drake Mayer impressed us today in a few facets of his game. He was able to size up an opponent and take him to the basket and finish with authority. Today, coach Lee and Coach Swiss focused their efforts on attacking the basket and Drake impressed me with his coachability. A couple of minor mishaps, followed by some coaching, and Drake was able to take his coach’s advice, and apply it during the next few plays, which he scored two really tough layups against a formidable defender.
