The First Live Evaluation Period of the 2024 Grassroots Season is almost among us! Although many of the Palmetto State’s top prospects are spread out throughout the country, it is still a great opportunity for them to gain in-person exposure to College Scouts. This list provides a name, short report, and location of five prospects inside the Top 50 that I consider a “must-watch” in this weekend’s Live Evaluation Period. Check it out below:
Melvin Teal Jr Melvin Teal Jr 6'3" | PG Summerville | 2025 State #301 Nation SC ( Charleston Raptors ) – The Prelude League (Speedway, Indiana)
Melvin is one of two Guards I think College Coaches need to check out this weekend. Melvin is a do-it-all prospect who contributes to winning through scoring, playmaking, rebounding, active defense, and vocal leadership. Teal can get downhill on almost any matchup due to his strength and ball-handling. Once he gets there, he has a polished shot from the mid-range, can finish around the trees at the basket, or set up a teammate for a better look. Melvin has had success at the Grassroots Level with Charleston Raptors and at the High School Level with Summerville and can bring an edge to a program at the next level.
Amare Anderson Amare Anderson 6'2" | PG Greer | 2025 State SC (Team Charlotte) – Under Armour UAA (Hamilton, Ohio)
Amare is the other Guard and he has been turning heads with his play with Under Armour’s Team Charlotte so far this Spring. He sets the tone with his physical play on the defensive end but can also bring scoring and playmaking on the offensive end. Anderson has always been a confident scorer from close and mid-range, but his improvement from the outside has begun to take him to a new level. Amare is also a terrific overall athlete with good size, speed, strength, and vertical qualities. He has several colleges interested already, but that number should only grow as the Summer Continues.
Jones Lay Jones Lay 6'10" | PF Atlantic Collegiate Academy | 2025 State SC (Garner Road) – Adidas 3SSB (Bryan, Texas)
Jones is an intriguing interior prospect from the 2025 Class. He has a good presence around the basket that contributes to rebounding and rim protection. He is a true 6’10” and has a well-built frame that is hard to bully around in the paint. Lay isn’t a finished product on the offensive end, but he is confident in his ability to finish over either shoulder and has the potential and drive for growth. If given the right opportunity, he could be a difference-maker at the next level.
Kaleb Phillips Kaleb Phillips 6'3" | SG Gaffney | 2025 State SC ( Upward Stars Upstate ) – Phenom G3 Live (Rock Hill, SC)
Every College Program – no matter the level – needs shooting. Kaleb Phillips Kaleb Phillips 6'3" | SG Gaffney | 2025 State SC brings shooting. Phillips is one of the best spot-up shooters in the class and is an important piece for this well-balanced Upward Stars Upstate 17U Squad. Phillips has deep range and is always shot-ready with his hands and feet. Kaleb’s confidence and efficiency will translate well to the next level and is a name to keep tabs on during the Live Period.
Jarius Davis Jarius Davis 6'4" | SF South Florence | 2025 State SC (Upward Stars Gold) – Adidas 3SSB Gold (Bryan, Texas)
Jarius brings a level of physicality on both ends that will translate well to the next level. He has good size and strength and is a versatile 3/4 depending on the situation. Davis is a tremendous shot blocker, a dominant rebounder, and moves his feet well, bringing key defensive attributes to any matchup. On the offensive end, he finds much of his production from the elbows but will move to the dunker spot for added spacing.
