A common theme involving Rayfield’s upside has been his potential as a versatile defensive weapon. That was on full display this past weekend as he defended the paint and also switched out onto big time guards and gave them fits. He has great mobility for his size, and combined with his long wingspan and understanding of angles makes him capable of not only staying with but at times stonewalling quicker guards. Along with his exploits on the perimeter, Rayfield continues to hit the glass and block shots at an increased rate and intensity. The promising wing-forward prospect continues to have a High Major grade with the upside to one day get paid beyond college.
The already elite perimeter shooter is continuing to develop his next level shooting skills. As Montonati physically matures and becomes stronger, his release is getting quicker on his silky smooth jumper. That type of improvement is crucial for the wing as he reaches the high level of basketball. With opponents getting faster and taller, the Owasso Rammer’s ability to get off shots against those closeouts become crucial. Playing against high level competition will likely make Oklahoma competition seem slow. Which could be scary for opponents as the sophomore already has a Class 6A Gold Ball and Gatorade Player of the Year on his resume.
Last Saturday, the light fully came on for the now Sunrise Christian forward. He’s always been a smooth player for his size and now is finshing stronger and more confidently around the rim. But it’s more than just being physically imposing, his smooth and high skill level became evident with the mid-range and off the dribble jumpers he was hitting. It’s rare to see a player that tall, confidently going between the legs, then hitting mid-range fadeways as seen in the NBA. If Placide’s performance in Indianapolis is any indication, he has top 50 in the nation upside. Possibly even 5 Star Status if his motor continues to run hot.
While Johnson’s Indy Heat suffered a rare defeat on Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t for his lack of production. He poured in 37 points, much of it coming in the second half. Including nearly leading a miracle comeback in the final moments. The lefty is ice cold in his smooth movements, with next level shot making. As evident by the 6-10 performance from three in the game against Team Griffin . All weekend long, Griffin’s 16U defensive minded squad slowed down teams, but Johnson’s crafty scoring ability carved them up.

The incoming freshman continues to play with a feel and skill level beyond his years. He does it in a variety of ways. There’s games that he catches fire from deep, as a spot up or off the dribble threat. Other times he looks unstoppable off the bounce with a gliding type ability to get downhill. And he’s already showing high level signs of being a big time playmaker, with great eye misdirection and accurate passing. “Bubba D” has an insane ceiling and a bright future as one of the “next up” in the 405’s strong tradition of producing high level guard prospects.
