You have a couple of unsigned senior point guards that will make a great fit for a lot of programs and I took the time out to break down each of their games. The state of Maryland has always had some of the most underrated players who usually end up making their mark with college programs. Here are a few southpaw point guards to keep an eye on in the unsigned senior waiver wire.
Phillip Crowell
Phillip Crowell
The best way to describe the 6’0 southpaw is “Gamer”! Crowell has a very solid body type which allows him to finish at the rim with bigs. He is good with either hand on finishes around the rim and knocks down open shots in key moments of games. The most intriguing attribute about Crowell is his leadership on the court as a playmaker. He’s very talkative on defense, a willing defender, and an offensive rebounder. His game will translate to any program and I’m sure the unsigned senior will land with a coach that will be appreciative of his skill set.
Aaron had a great weekend in his debut as the PG for 1life1shot on the Puma circuit. The 6’0 southpaw averaged 5 assists and 13 points per game including a 7-assist game in one of the most exciting matchups of the weekend. Jackson lives in the paint and makes great reads in traffic which makes him a tough cover in the open floor. One of the true PGs I saw this weekend operating in the high pick and roll with great patience. Very quick and a menace on the defensive side of the ball. He picked up an offer from Husson University in his first weekend and I’m sure more are to come from the lefty.
Shamir Taylor Shamir Taylor 5’11” | PG St. Charles | 2024 State MD is coming off a great senior year where he as All-Met, First Team All- SMAC and flat-out shot the cover off the ball all year. He was a big reason St Charles High School made it to the finals at the University of Maryland. The southpaw has a quick release on his shot which allows him to get it off in traffic and on spot ups. Shamir’s frame will fool you until you get on the court with him and see how athletic he is. He will continue to get stronger, but the way he shoots it from anywhere on the floor makes him a very legit PG at 5″11.
One of the more intriguing 2024 point guards in the area that a lot of people may not know is Elijah Hall Elijah Hall 6’2″ | SG Mount Saint Joseph | 2024 State MD . He is a late bloomer who is still growing and brings a crafty game that I believe coaches will love. Elijah stands at 6’4 which allows him to see over smaller defenders and shoot his mid-range off the dribble with ease. Over the weekend there was a stretch where he scored or assisted on 4 straight processions. His defense is what most impressed me over the weekend guarding 94 feet and being able to switch to bigger wings and still hold his own. The kid has a running floater that he has mastered which will translate to the taller bigs in college. A vocal leader who can play on or off the ball has his stock rising early on the unsigned senior wavier wire.
I’ve watched Tre’ for years and each time I get excited because he plays with so much passion. The Spaulding transfer ended up at Largo High School where he won a state championship along with All-League Honors. Tre’ has the body of a tailback at 5’9 and really puts pressure on the defense in the open floor with an array of shots. He can finish with either hand in traffic and consistently makes the right play in the half-court offense. His best attribute is his ability to create turnovers as he led his team in steals this year. You can always count on a timely 3-point shot when you watch him play and for a point guard, that’s a great skill set. I will keep my eye open to see where the southpaw lands, but I know a coach will be happy to have him.
