Point Guard, #4 Overall
Cobin was the brilliant playmaker that kept DeSoto cranking at a high level the past three seasons. The guy has a great handle vision and creativity. He’s one of the few players who could dominate a game without scoring. But Cobin was more than capable of filling it up – he’s not the school’s all-time leading scorer for no reason. He was one of the most fun players in the state to watch.
Combo Guard, #9 Overall
Arguably the most successful all-around athlete in the state this year, Heckel is a track star, an all-state hooper…oh, yeah and he’s also a D1 football commit. He could probably star at lacrosse or volleyball or bocce ball if he had the chance. He is fast, strong and explosive, and has a competitive streak.
Shooting Guard, #1 Overall
We will miss writing about Williams. Arguably the best player in the state for the past three years, he has been a regular on our pages. With all the talent in the Wichita Heights program, Williams has played an interesting role. He has distributed the ball and blended with his teammates. It’s been an incredible mix, with the Falcons reaching the 6A title game the past three seasons. It’s worth noting that the #2 player in the state – Andrell Burton Andrell Burton 6’4″ | SG Campus | 2024 State #213 Nation KS – is not on this list only because we listed him and Williams both as shooting guards. Burton deserves some recognition here.
Small Forward, #5 Overall
You can’t help but love what Thengvall has done for Kapaun the last couple of years. Emerging from his big brother’s shadow as a junior, he led the Crusaders to the brink of a title as a junior. He came back with a vengeance as a senior and made sure the trophy returned to Kapaun. He handled the ball, distributed it scorers, scored at all three levels, defended and rebounded at a high level, a truly versatile star.
Power Forward, #3 Overall
Matteoni popped on our radar as a rebounding warrior as a sophomore, and we enjoyed watching his growth in the two years that followed. He steadily shot up our rankings, finally finishing in the number three spot. He’s a rim running, rebounding monster who combines passing ability, dominance around the rim and intelligence.
Center: #18 Overall
One of the biggest disappointments of this season was when Homan went down with an injury right before the state tournament. He worked so hard and gave the team so much over the years, you hated to see him miss out on the chance to win a title. But that doesn’t change what we think of him. Homan is a paint warrior who combines fundamentals with ferocity and team-first attitude.
