PHD is talking about the Warriors from Sioux Falls Washington!
“Our varsity players did a great job of developing and improving throughout the course of the season. They found what their role was going to be within the bigger picture of our team and did all they could to thrive in those roles. This is what led us to entertaining the type of success that we were able to have. Our three All-Conference Players, Tommy Hoffman Tommy Hoffman 6'3" | SG Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD , Lucas Johnson Lucas Johnson 6'6" | SF Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD , and Jhace Woods Jhace Woods 6'3" | SF Sioux Falls Washington | 2026 State SD really found ways to step up and make big plays in games to get us over the hump time and time again. These guys grew up so much, and we look forward to more growth as we bring them back next season.” –Jeff Tobin

Q&A with coach Tobin
PHD: How would you sum up the season for your squad?
“Our season motto was “Earn It” and it will continue to be. We graduated 8 seniors off the 22-23 team and had one guy ( Lucas Johnson Lucas Johnson 6'6" | SF Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD ) from that team with any meaningful experience. We knew that we were going to have to earn everything we got this year, and we simply wanted to focus on earning it through hard work, dedication to the process, and dedication to each other. Achieving a 15-win season and 4th place at State with all new players to the varsity floor is a testament to how these players bought in and wanted to earn what people may have said they wouldn’t be able to.“
PHD: Do you have any fun memories you want to share with us?
“A highlight for us was a week where we were set to play SF Lincoln, SF O’Gorman, and SF Jefferson all in the same week. We decided to treat it like a “State Tourney” week, because it doesn’t get to be any more of a gauntlet than that. Finding a way to come out victorious in each of those games was a highlight for our guys, and got them to believe that they were able to win consecutive games against really good opponents.“
PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?
“I think our team learned this season that they need to expect adversity, embrace it, and don’t try to get through it on their own. I believe this is an area for our “young” group to continue to grow as we head into next year.“
PHD: What are a few things your team improved on throughout the season?
“Our team really improved in our ability to take care of the basketball and make better decisions with it. Also, our overall intensity improved mightily on both ends of the floor as we learned what the varsity level takes in regards to how hard you have to play, how well you have to execute, and how physical you need to be in order to compete.“
PHD: Who are some role players that stood out to you?
“Two role players that really stuck out were Brennan VerHey Brennan VerHey 6'1" | SG Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD and Sam Baskin Sam Baskin 6'2" | SG Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD . VerHey was our best defender and always took on the assignment of guarding the opposing team’s best player. He was also our glue on the offensive end, cutting for baskets and getting the ball where it needed to go. Baskin really grew into his role on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he knocked down key shots from the perimeter and went into the post to post-up mismatches time and time again toward the end of the season. Defensively, he bought into his role and was a great defender for us down the stretch.“
PHD: Can you talk about your seniors and what will be missed?
“We had two seniors, Lubab Kambalo Lubab Kambalo 5'7" | PG Sioux Falls Washington | 2024 State SD and Aidan Brooks. These guys showed up to work hard each day, loved the game, and cared about their teammates. These are the things we ask from our guys, and they will be missed because they demonstrated these traits daily.“
PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?
“ Jhace Woods Jhace Woods 6'3" | SF Sioux Falls Washington | 2026 State SD (sophomore) burst onto the scene this year and showed that he was ready to compete at a high level already. He has an athletic ability that not many others have and now is excited to add to his game heading into his junior season. Ben Sprecher Ben Sprecher 6'4" | SF Sioux Falls Washington | 2027 State SD (freshman) saw a heavy amount of varsity action and demonstrated that the moment wasn’t too big for him in his freshman year. Ben will continue to add to his game and the game will continue to slow down for him as he heads into his sophomore season.“
PHD: Who was your best defensive player?
“ Brennan VerHey Brennan VerHey 6'1" | SG Sioux Falls Washington | 2025 State SD was our best defender all year. This wasn’t because of his speed or athleticism, but rather his defensive instincts, IQ, and discipline. VerHey is often a step ahead of the offense, understanding what they are trying to do, and he competes at a high level at all times.“
PHD: Any last comments/thoughts on the season?
“We are excited to have our starting 5 returning next season, along with younger key players off the bench. The experience and success we entertained this season will only help motivate us as we head into the offseason.“
Best of luck to the Warriors this offseason!
