This gathering at the esteemed Boo Williams Sportsplex signified a new era in youth hoops and provided a platform to showcase much of North America’s future basketball stars.
Identical to my eight-part, Jr. EYBL Chicago feature, in these articles I’ll spotlight standout performers from each pool match-up at the respective event through a series of superlatives. Once again, it’s important to note that the first year of the Nike Jr. EYBL encompasses only eighth-grade teams, thus the included prospects are exclusively from the Class of 2028. Beginning with Pool A and culminating with the final group in Pool H, this sequence of exclusive recaps is intended to capture the essence of talent participating in this inaugural circuit.
Event Superlative Award: BEST ATHLETE
Marque Johnson
Marque Johnson
Marque Johnson once again affirmed his status as one of the premier athletes in the class of 2028 with his performance at the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional in Hampton. As an explosive playmaker, Johnson electrified the court with his dynamic athleticism and ability to make game-changing plays. His combination of speed, agility, and leaping ability makes him a nightmare for defenders, as he consistently creates mismatches and scoring opportunities for his team. Johnson’s versatility and athleticism make him an incredibly tough matchup for opponents, as he has the capability to impact the game on both ends of the floor.

Jamieson Young
Jamieson Young
Jamieson Young assumed the role of lead floor general for Team Final during the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional in Hampton, showcasing his ability to orchestrate the team’s offense effectively. With a high basketball IQ and exceptional court vision, Young consistently made the right reads and delivered precise passes to his teammates, facilitating ball movement and creating scoring opportunities. Beyond his playmaking abilities, Young exhibited a knack for making winning plays for Team Final, whether it was through timely assists, clutch baskets, or defensive stops.
Event Superlative Award: BEST DEFENDER
Ian Archbold
Ian Archbold
Ian Archbold has established himself as one of the most impactful players in the Class of 2028, earning recognition as one of the top two players in his class. Known for his versatility and ability to make an impact on both ends of the court, Archbold possesses a diverse skill set that sets him apart from his peers. Offensively, he excels in scoring from the midrange, showcasing a smooth shooting stroke and an ability to create scoring opportunities for himself. Defensively, Archbold’s agility and defensive instincts allow him to effectively defend multiple positions, making him a valuable asset on that end of the floor as well. Regardless of the situation, Archbold consistently contributed whenever he was on the court in Hampton at the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional, demonstrating his reliability and productivity as a player.

Erick Dampier
Erick Dampier
Erick Dampier Jr. brings a wealth of basketball pedigree to the court, being the son of former NBA player Erick Dampier. Standing out with his imposing presence, Dampier Jr. commands attention around the rim, where he demonstrates a level of physical dominance that sets him apart from his peers. Possessing superior strength compared to many opponents, Dampier Jr. imposes his will with tenacity, often outmuscling defenders to secure rebounds and finish plays in the paint. His game is characterized by toughness and resilience as he will be a major part of Alabama Fusion throughout the rest of the Nike Jr. EYBL.

Rowan Phillips
Rowan Phillips emerged as a standout scorer, showcasing his ability to light up the scoreboard with ease during his impressive showing in Hampton at the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional. Possessing a diverse scoring repertoire, Phillips demonstrated his knack for putting points on the board in a variety of ways. Whether it’s slashing to the rim, knocking down jump shots, or creating off the dribble, Phillips proved to be a dynamic offensive threat capable of scoring in bunches. His versatility as a scorer makes him a challenging matchup for opposing defenses, as he can exploit any defensive scheme thrown his way.
