This gathering at the esteemed Boo Williams Sportsplex signified a new era in youth hoops and provided a platform to showcase much of North America’s future basketball stars.
Identical to my eight-part, Jr. EYBL Chicago feature, in these articles I’ll spotlight standout performers from each pool match-up at the respective event through a series of superlatives. Once again, it’s important to note that the first year of the Nike Jr. EYBL encompasses only eighth-grade teams, thus the included prospects are exclusively from the Class of 2028. Beginning with Pool A and culminating with the final group in Pool H, this sequence of exclusive recaps is intended to capture the essence of talent participating in this inaugural circuit.

Utilizing his athleticism, he effectively navigated past defenders to create scoring opportunities for himself and his team, proving to be a pivotal part of his team’s offense. Hood showed versatility in his scoring approach, showing proficiency in various scoring methods which kept opposing defenses on their toes throughout the weekend. His performance in Hampton highlighted his potential as a dynamic offensive threat and a key player for his team moving forward for the rest of the spring.

Deonte Jiles showcased his intriguing blend of size and athleticism while playing multiple perimeter positions for Jet Academy during the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional in Hampton. His combination of physical attributes makes him a dynamic presence on the court, particularly in offensive situations. Jiles’ offensive versatility was on full display, as he demonstrated the ability to create scoring opportunities for himself as well as play effectively off the catch. His fluidity allowed him to adapt to the pace of the game with ease and adjust to a multitude of offensive scenarios; the result being that Jiles is an obvious asset for his team with our without the ball in his hands.

Kevin Wheatley demonstrated his impressive physical attributes and potential on the court for NY Lightning during the weekend in Hampton, Virginia at the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional event. With notable athleticism and a knack for finishing above the rim, he stands out as one of the top finishers in the Class of 2028 at this juncture. Wheatley’s ability to excel in transition, particularly in getting downhill and attacking the basket, poses a significant threat to opposing defenses. His athleticism and skill set make him a player that teams must keep tabs on when he’s on the break. Equally impressive is Wheatley’s increasing confidence and assertiveness as a playmaker. His poise in making plays not only for himself but also for his teammates adds another element to his game and further highlights his potential as a dynamic and elite contributor on the court.
