Taking place at Wintrust Sports Complex, this inaugural gathering of elite talent promised a showcase of athleticism, fierce competition, and the boundless potential of tomorrow’s basketball stars. Nike’s signature branding, style, and innovation were on full display and provided electrifying matchups as well as several unforgettable moments that unfolded on the hardwood.
In this eight-part series, I’ll highlight a list of the top performers from each of the pool match-ups by way of a list of superlatives. Keep in mind, that year one of the Nike Jr. EYBL exclusively features eighth-grade teams, so all of the prospects featured in this collection of recaps are currently members of the Class of 2028. With an impressive blend of athleticism and scoring ability, he emerged as a potent scoring threat for his team. Throughout the weekend, Curl-Okafor demonstrated his desire to contribute on offense by pursuing touches and making the most of his opportunities with the ball in his hands. His effectiveness in scoring the basketball highlighted his basketball IQ and ability to capitalize in isolation settings.

Dario Washington
Dario Washington, hailing from Colorado, demonstrated his versatility on the court by effectively blending playmaking and scoring for his team. Despite facing tough competition and being part of a team that was at times undersized, Washington’s efforts were instrumental in keeping his team competitive in challenging games. His talents as a steady ball-handler and his ability to contribute both as a playmaker and a scorer underscored his value as his team’s most well-rounded player. As Washington’s basketball persona continues to blossom and he progresses physically, the crafty floor general is certainly a prospect to monitor in the Rocky Mountain region.

DeAndre Higgs showed off his strength and versatility during his recent performance at the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional in greater Chicago, Illinois. Notably, the athletic forward displayed the ability to effectively attack from the perimeter while also demonstrating proficiency in finishing plays in the paint. Higgs’ versatility was further highlighted by his valuable contributions on the defensive end, particularly due to his ability to slow opponents on interior as well as the perimeter. While already a formidable presence on the court, Higgs is actively making strides on the offensive end to transition into a full-time wing prospect. This evolution in his game suggests a commitment to expanding his skill set and maximizing his potential as a player.

Jamal Haroun
Jamal Haroun
Jamal Haroun, a defensive-minded forward from Canada, made a significant impact during his weekend in the USA, utilizing his athleticism and length to be a formidable interior presence for his team. His ability to alter and block shots in the paint, as well as secure rebounds, showcased his defensive prowess and contributed to his team’s success. While Haroun’s offensive skills and confidence are still developing, he demonstrated the ability to capitalize on second-chance opportunities around the rim, illustrating his potential to emerge as a contributor on both ends of the floor. As he continues to refine his natural tools, Haroun’s ceiling as a prospect is appealing, and his confidence appears to be tracking in the right direction.

MarQwan Morgan
Morgan emerged as one of the standout scorers during the Nike Jr. EYBL Super Regional in Chicago, contributing significantly to his team’s success, as they went unbeaten in pool play and advanced to the event’s platinum bracket. His offensive versatility was on full display throughout the weekend, as the Iowa resident demonstrated the ability to beat defenders off the dribble, and finish in the lane. Additionally, Morgan showcased his all-around scoring proficiency, both as a spot-up shooter and by efficiently creating space for himself to convert jumpers while on the move. His ability to score in multiple ways makes Morgan a potent offensive threat, capable of keeping defenders guessing, and consistently putting points on the board. Moreover, his knack for creating space and making plays off the bounce adds another dimension to his game, further solidifying his overall effectiveness.
