Its always exciting to project what younger underclassmen are gonna be in years to come, so you’ll get some of that here. Some of these players have already started varsity games while others have left huge impressions on their freshman and/or JV teams last season. Regardless all on this list will either start or be key contributors on their teams this year. Please, keep in mind, this is only a partial list and not a final preview of this class as it will be more thorough once we receive more roster information form AAU coaches around WV.
- Jasiah King Jasiah King 6'3" | PG Martinsburg | 2027 State WV is one of the most talked about freshman in several years in WV. While most of WV isn’t quite sure who he is, folks in the eastern panhandle know exactly who he is as he had become a middle school legend in those parts. At first glance you can see why King was revered as one of the most anticipated high school players in many years. He has extraordinary skills for a fifteen year old, great height and length for a guard, scores it a level most freshman can’t, especially at the 4A level. One of the things I picked up on the first time watching was he seems to have an excellent feel for the game and high basketball IQ which helps make up for some physical shortcomings when you’re young. King will certainly play a key role in this coming year’s Martinsburg squad which is a talented one.
- Max Frey Max Frey 6'1" | CG Morgantown | 2027 State WV we believe will be one of the more exciting players in coming years for Morgantown High. We first saw Max back in January when he came off the bench early in the first quarter and immediately recorded a steal and finished the play with a breakaway dunk. Obviously athletic and explosive, maybe the most impressive part for Frey is just being on the varsity roster as a freshman for the two time champs. Look for Frey to step in at shooting guard and likely start next season.
- Seth Cronin Seth Cronin 6'1" | SG Ritchie County | 2027 State WV is a kid we love but have only gotten to watch a couple times. The slick shooting lefty came off the bench for Ritchie this season but we’d consider him a starter seeing that he was obviously more talented and productive than at least two starters in front of him and certainly played more minutes, but I digress. Cronin is a skilled ballhandler, has a great idea of how to create space for himself as well as catch and shoot it as well as anyone in the 2027 class.
- Nymir Bryant Nymir Bryant 6'5" | SF St. Joseph's | 2027 State WV is one of the state’s most under the radar players, but that probably won’t last long. Playing at Huntington St Joe’s Bryant has toiled in obscurity if you will helping lead the Irish to a state tournament appearance while averaging 12 ppg as a freshman. A long and athletic player, Bryant will demand defensive attention next season and will be a match up problem for alot of teams in their division.
- Anderson McDougal Anderson McDougal 6'0" | CG Bridgeport | 2027 State WV quickly became one of WV’s most notable freshman this past season while leading the Indians multiple times in scoring which is an impressive feat in 4A competition. McDougal can play the 1 or 2 positions with ease and can turn his scorers mentality on in an instant. Having a great knack for finding a defenses weak spots to score or distribute, McDougal makes it look easy. High energy and pesky ln defense he can anticipate and disrupt often.
- Connor Balwanz Connor Balwanz 5'11" | PG North Marion | 2027 State WV has started to shine running with Best Virginia AAU. The North Marion Husky is a smooth ball handler and possible candidate to start at guard for the Huskies as they graduated three starting guards. When getting our first couple looks at Balwanz in AAU season the first thing that we noticed is his excellent court vision and willingness to distribute the ball to teammates in scoring position. We’re looking forward to tracking his progress throughout the AAU season.
