For the case of this article, Sleepers refers to uncommitted prospects that are ranked outside of the Top 100.
Here are five prospects, that fit that description, that coaches should keep an eye on this spring.
Sablon, who recently wrapped up his post-grad season at MacDuffie, is one of the top uncommitted lead guards in New England. He’s comfortable playing on or off the ball on the offensive end and has the skillset to do either at a high level. When he has the ball in his hands, he’s a quality decision maker that has proven capable of getting into the teeth of the defense and spraying it out to open shooters on the perimeter. If he slides off the ball, he is a capable scorer who can create his own buckets in the mid-range and is a high level shooter from behind the arc. Defensively, he’s solid on the ball and show a high level of competitiveness on that end of the floor.
White, a Class A All-NEPSAC honoree this winter, has recently started to garner scholarship level attention and now holds multiple Division II offers. A powerful combo forward that can finish plays high above the rim, White showed off an expanded offensive game this winter with more perimeter tools than we had previously seen. He’s a strong offensive rebounder that can punish smaller defenders in the paint, but also now can make plays off the bounce where he uses his athleticism and strength to finish through contact at the rim. He’s a quality decision maker and has also showed signs of being a consistent perimeter shooter. Defensively, he screams versatility and is capable of guarding both on the perimeter and interior.
Njenga, a key contributor on Bradford Christian’s NEPSAC AA championship team, is a high-academic combo guard that can make plays for himself and others off the bounce. A proven winner with good positional size, Njenga is a lefty that does a great job of getting downhill off the bounce. He’s a crafty finisher around the rim, does a great job moving without the ball, and knocks down a high percentage of his jumpers in catch-and-shoot situations. His positional size and length make him a strong perimeter defender and when you combine those physical gifts with his high IQ, he has the potential to be a perimeter stopper at the next level.
Steele, a back-t0-back state champion at North (Worcester), is not only one of the top uncommitted prospects in New England, but also one of the region’s most explosive athletes. A forward that plays with a high motor on both ends of the floor, Steele took his game to another level in some of the biggest moments of the season. He’s a terrific rebounder, particularly on the offensive end of the floor where he has a knack for keeping plays alive. He expanded his game to the point where he can make plays off the bounce when he faces up and even knocked down an occasional three this season. He’s a versatile defender that can guard all five positions, creates a significant amount of turnovers off deflections and steals, and is a high level shot blocker.
Matos, one of Rhode Island’s most dynamic wings, is a prospect that is full of long-term potential. An athletic and lengthy scorer, Matos does a terrific job of creating scoring opportunities with the ball in his hands. While he’s a capable shooter from behind the arc, his game is at its best when he is getting downhill and scoring at the rim. He has a quick first step and does a great job of utilizing his length as a crafty finisher in the paint. Defensively, his physical gifts stand out as he makes a ton of plays on the ball and in passing lanes where he’s incredibly disruptive with his length. He’s wiry strong and his vertical athleticism pops in spurts, leaving us to believe that he still has another level to reach as a prospect.
