It's sad that, by the time the tournaments end on Saturday, a lot of the big performances of the first round are forgotten. The heroes from the finals are what get the most publicity.

At Prep Hoops, we recognize that some of the best efforts are made in defeat. That means some guys had great games in the opening round, only to be sent home after just one game.

Here are some of the best performances by the One and Dones from 4-6A (in alphabetical order):

[player_tooltip player_id='1624971' first='Coley' last='Burgess'], 6-foot guard, 2025, Rock Creek:

The daring Burgess was at his best in the first half of Rock Creek's game against the bigger Atchison team. He darts in and out of defenses, shooting at angles and pulling up on a dime for jumpers. Burgess went off in the first half, netting 17 of the Mustangs' points in a close game. Atchison held him down in the second half, but he finished with 21 points on 8-14 shooting and 3-3 from the line. Burgess is a creative scorer who gets it done even against big, physical, athletic defenses.

[player_tooltip player_id='1461338' first='Joey' last='Matteoni'], 6-foot-8 forward, 2024, Blue Valley Northwest:

The defeat of the defending champs was somewhat shocking. The way it happened, with the Huskies scoring just 43 points and hitting an awful 11 of 26 free throws, was even more shocking. But Matteoni, arguably the best big man in the state, was good as usual. He scored around the goal, blocked shots and dominated the glass. He finished with 18 points and 16 boards and helped fuel a comeback in the late stages of the game that came up just short.

[player_tooltip player_id='1588383' first='Jaret' last='Sanchez'], 6-foot-5 forward, 2025, Shawnee Heights (pictured):

If the way the Huskies went down was shocking, what can you say about how Shawnee Heights lost? They crumbled under pressure and saw a big lead slip away. But let's not overlook what Sanchez did in the final game of his junior season. The big scorer battled and gave his all, as he always does. He bombed away from deep and took defenders into the paint, hitting for 19 points. He grabbed 19 boards and dished out 3 assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='2387718' first='Manuel' last='Martinez'], 6-foot-3 forward, 2024, and [player_tooltip player_id='2393755' first='Ismael' last='Berry'], 6-foot guard, 2025, Wichita East:

East was a surprise entrant to the 6A field, and they were impressively competitive against the top seed. They led by two points at halftime. Leading the Aces were the athletic scorers Martinez and Berry, who attacked off the bounce and scored efficiently. Martinez and Berry scored 19 and 17 points respectively against big, athletic defenders.

[player_tooltip player_id='2314754' first='Kaason' last='Thomas'], 5-foot-11 guard, 2024, and [player_tooltip player_id='1270094' first='Andrell' last='Burton'], 6-foot-6 guard, 2024, Campus:

Ever since Campus reached the title game in 2021, it's been Thomas and Burton trying to bring the Colts back. They succeeded in their senior seasons to get to state, and they didn't go down to powerful Wichita Heights easily. They both battled to the basket and drew fouls. They shot a combined 8-12 from the line. They each dealt out 3 assists. Thomas scored 20 and Burton got 16 in their final games.
