Campbell was dominant in 1-on-1 play, using his 6-2 frame to bully his way to the rim and finish through contact, but he also showed a smooth stroke from the mid-range, good handles, and the ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his jumper from 15 feet. He knows how to get to his spots and does a good job moving without the ball when they transitioned into 5-on-5 play. He does a good job using his frame to create additional space to get his jumper off, and he has range out to the arc.
PG Jeremiah Slaughter Jeremiah Slaughter 6'0" | SG Abraham Lincoln | 2027 IA (Council Bluffs Lincoln)
A 5-11 lead guard who handles the ball really well, Slaughter has a really nice hesitation move that he uses to help blow by defenders, and he does a great job playing with different speeds, changing pace to get to the rim. He sees the floor really well and can finish with either hand around the rim. He shoots it well from both the mid-range and 3-point line, and is a quick defender with good hands.
PG Derrick Akines Derrick Akines 6'1" | PG Waterloo West | 2027 State IA (Waterloo West)
A 6-1 lead guard with great handles and feel for the game, Akines is a versatile playmaker who sees the floor extremely well, does a great job changing speeds, and he has a great frame that he uses to absorb contact and finish through it around the rim. He’s a skilled passer and playmaker who can also post up smaller defenders and use his strength to his advantage. He’s a solid on-ball defender with long arms, quick hands, and a high IQ.
CG Charlie Reich (Gilbert)
Reich may have actually been my favorite 2027 to watch on Saturday afternoon. He’s tiny, listed at 5-6, but he’s a fantastic shooter both off the dribble and the catch. He has a quick release, unlimited range, and he handles the ball well. He uses his good handles and footwork to create a little extra space, necessary to finish with his small frame, and he moves well without the ball in his hands.
SF Wesley Rainer Wesley Rainer 6'3" | PG Senior | 2027 IA (Senior)
A long, hyper-athletic 6-2/6-3 wing, Rainer has a ton of length and athleticism, and he does a great job moving his feet on the defensive end. He sits in his stance and uses his length and quickness to his advantage defensively, and with his frame and speed, he’s able to defend multiple positions. On the offensive end, he can score off the dribble, getting to the rim and finishing through contact, or he can create looks off the bounce for his teammates.
SF Jaden Houser Jaden Houser 6'2" | SF Johnston | 2027 State IA (Johnston)
Houser is a fantastic athlete, a bouncy 6-1/6-2 wing who explodes off the floor to snatch rebounds out of nowhere. He has a great second jump that he uses to elevate above opposing players, and he’s a good enough ball-handler and passer to lead the break after pulling down a defensive rebound. In the halfcourt he can create off the dribble, get to the rim, and finish at the bucket through contact. He’s a long, rangy defender who moves his feet and uses his length to impact the game on that end of the floor as well. If he keeps growing, and can add some range to his game, he could be one of the best players in the state in the 2027 class.
SF Jude Hazell (Cedar Falls)
Cedar Falls continues to have a really nice run of talent coming through the school, with Hazell and a few other Tigers in the 2027 class standing out on Saturday. Hazell is a long, lanky 6-3 wing who covers a ton of ground on the defensive end, using his length and speed to defend multiple positions. He does a good job contesting shots without fouling and he moves his feet well on that end of the floor. He showed the ability to score against smaller defenders on the block, or take bigger defenders off the dribble and get to the rim. An active rebounder on both ends of the floor, he’s another wing with good size and length who could become a really intriguing player if he can add some consistent range.
