DRSM won 18 games this season, knocked off De Smet in the regular season, and they made it to the SoDak 16. The Cardinals will lose some talented players to graduation but bring back some dudes. PHD thinks Dell Rapids St. Mary will be one of the best in B next year.

Q&A with Coach Fitzgerald
PHD: How would you sum up the season for your squad?
“Finished 18-5, until our loss in the SoDak16 we were on an 8-game win streak. 14th time in school history qualifying for the Region/SoDak16 game.“
PHD: Do you have any fun memories you want to share with us from the season?
“Obviously, our ultimate goal was to make the State B tournament in Aberdeen which we fell short of but we were proud of the accomplishments we achieved. We finished 9-1 and a 2nd place finish for the second year in a row in the Dakota Valley Conference. We were also the team to break De Smet’s 62-game win streak vs. Class B opponents. We have much respect for their program and what they have accomplished over the last 6 seasons and to beat them was a step in the right direction for our program.“
PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?
“We felt we had a strong returning core leading into the 23-24 season and tried to schedule a tougher schedule for the season to help prepare us for postseason play. We played against 6 teams that played in the Class A or Class B State Tournaments. Our coaching staff felt that this ultimately helped us grow individually and as a team throughout the year. Hopefully, those experiences will boost us into the offseason and benefit us next year.“
PHD: What are a few things your team improved on throughout the season?
“Being able to be consistent from game to game was one of the main focal points we stressed throughout the season. Treating each game the same and trying to not get too high or too low is something we continue to teach in our program. We have a great group of young men that are fun to be around which makes our job as coaches enjoyable.“
PHD: Who are some role players that stood out to you?
“Seniors – Lucas Flemmer, Owen Vargas, & Camden Gilbert were in and out of the starting lineups throughout the season or asked to play various roles. Each one of them attacked their duties as best as we could ask them to do. Obviously not being in the starting lineup as consistent or playing as much as they would have liked, you never saw them approach a day any different than another. They were great role models to the younger players in the program.“
PHD: Can you talk about your seniors?
“Seniors – Outside of the seniors I listed above, Nic Gaspar Nic Gaspar 6'2" | SG Dell Rapids St. Mary | 2024 State SD will undoubtedly be missed next year for what he accomplished over his 4 years at SM. He was a 4yr Varsity Letter winner. He helped propel the Cardinals to the State Tournament as a Freshman and was a 3yr starter his Soph, Jr, & Sr. year. He was a 2nd team All-DVC selection his Soph year and a 1st team All-DVC section his Jr & Sr year. He finished just shy of 1,000 points finishing his career with 948 career points.“
PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?
“Sophomores – Lincoln LeBrun Lincoln LeBrun 5'10" | CG Dell Rapids St. Mary | 2026 State SD , Walker Warwick Walker Warwick 6'2" | SF Dell Rapids St. Mary | 2026 State SD & Fresh Jaxon Baumberger Jaxon Baumberger 6'2" | PF Dell Rapid St. Mary | 2027 SD will be looked upon to take big steps in roles as we head into the offseason. They played major roles on the JV level with hopes of translating that to the varsity level.“
PHD: Who was your best defensive player?
“ Nic Gaspar Nic Gaspar 6'2" | SG Dell Rapids St. Mary | 2024 State SD was our athletic wing who had the ability to guard 1-5. He will be greatly missed next year. Maverick LeBrun Maverick LeBrun 6'4" | SG Dell Rapids St. Mary | 2025 State SD led our team in Rebounding (8 rpg) and Blocks (2 bpg) and really has grown into his role over the last season.“
PHD: Any last comments/thoughts on the season?
“Finishing 18-5 and losing in the SoDak16 is a great accomplishment for our group. We will have 3 returning starters back and 3 of the top 4 returning scorers. The coaching staff is excited to continue to see the growth of each individual over the offseason with hopes to be competitive again come the 24-25 basketball season. #GoCardinals“
