Marshfield entered the Sectional matchup off a narrow victory against #5 Kaukauna (71-68). Marshfield is ranked #1 in the playoffs and finished 1st (12-0) in the Wisconsin Valley conference this season. They have finished atop their conference for three seasons in a row.
Neenah, the #6 seed in the Sectional bracket entered the game following a victory over #9 Stevens Point (68-50). Neenah comes into this game on a 12 game winning streak, finishing 2nd (13-5) in the highly competitive Fox Valley Conference. Neenah looked to continue their streak facing #1 Marshfield in the Sectional Final.
Below are the Notable Performers from Thursday’s Sectional matchup:
Henson was a reliable option on the offensive end for Marshfield. He scored within the system in a big way from all three levels of the floor. His strong drives and pressure on the basket was an impact for the #1 seed. The Junior guard showed great awareness of when to score and when to find teammates for great looks.
Landon Lee
Lee got off to a hot start spacing the floor from range for Marshfield. His ability to knock down well contested shots provided the #1 seeded Marshfield with a great deal of momentum. Second, his decision making in the pick and roll was a thing of beauty. Being deemed a shooter by his opponent, he used their aggression against #6 seeded Neenah in a major way finding the roller against hard hedges.
Corso was very methodical with the ball in his hands, finding teammates on time and on target and putting others in position to score. The lead guard showed up in big time moments including; a jaw dropping dunk in transition, and a mid range jump shot at the buzzer shifting the momentum at the half. Neenah continued to rely on the three level scorer, as he drained threes from range fueling a second half comeback. Corso finished with 24 points.
Pohl served his team as a mismatch on the perimeter for opposing bigs. He was able to pull rim protectors out of the paint with his ability to shoot it from range. The lanky forward protected the paint in a major way on the defensive end of the floor. The silky smooth sophomore stretched the floor with corner threes and solid drives to the basket using his advantaged foot speed. Pohl is a prospect to keep an eye out for in the coming years.
Wunderlich provided high energy and activity for the Neenah Rockets. He showed poise and finesse with finishing around the basket. He brought a toughness to a rough match up against the #1 seeded Marshfield team. He came up clutch with a chase down block and a sweet floater in the closing possessions. His willingness to rebound on both ends stood out the most and also played a major role in the sectional final game.
